Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1500

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0 (weighted 4.38
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1 (but so are like 70 other people, it’s weird)
AP (place score in parenthesis): US Gov (5), World History (4), BC Calc (4) AB Calc subscore (5), Stats (TBD)

Senior Year Course Load: The IB classes, AP Stats, Chamber Orchestra

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): LD Debate (captain/coach 2 years), viola, quartet, university orchestras, youth orchestras, started 2 volunteer organizations (founder/president)
Job/Work Experience: Work as veterinary assistant, manage a quartet and play in it
Volunteer/Community service: Started 2 volunteer organizations (raising money for hospital and providing free music lessons), hospital volunteering
Summer Activities: Medical camps, music camps, work at vet clinic
Essays (rating 1-10, details): For the arts and sciences essay, I talked about my first debate topic and how it inspired my interest in biomedical ethics (it was ok, probably a 7 or 8/10). For the other essay, I chose to write about a quirk and talked about the viola and its imperfections (better, 8 or 9/10)
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: IB Bio teacher (7/10). I did two small independent research projects with her, so she knew me pretty well, but not very well.
Teacher Rec #2: From my former debate coach (8/10) who offered to write me the rec before I even asked. I stepped up a lot after he retired and led the team in his absence, so he had a lot to write about, I think.
Counselor Rec: 7/10. I’ve talked to her a decent amount, so she knows me fairly well, but I go to a large school.
Additional Rec: Orchestra teacher, 9/10. He’s known me for almost 4 years and has been involved in my 2 organizations, so he can talk about initiative and all that jazz.
Interview: Did one and it was great! Shoutout to Hannah, she told me a lot about the school.

Essays:
-Common App (8.5/10): Sent it to essay editing companies, college counselors, and teachers, and they all said they had nothing to correct. It was about the way music has shaped me as a person, which is a cliche topic, but I made it personal to me. Mentioned how the elements of the music alphabet are present in literature, where dynamics and tonal shifts are present, and talked about Seamus Heaney. Then talked about leadership and compared myself to a metronome. Overall, solid.
Teacher Recommendations:
-From my AP English Language teacher: Solid, he’s very fond of me and we’ve grown close even when I don’t have him as a teacher anymore. 8/10
-From my PreCalc and AP Calc teacher: It was probably ok, nothing spectacular. 6/10
Counselor Rec: Has a really good opinion of me after my PSAT Junior year, I always go see him in his office for any scholarships, we have a good relationship. It was probably ok. 6/10

Reflection
Strengths: I love and am well versed in art history, and I think that passion was a big strength for a humanities scholarship applicant. I am also a pretty strong writer and I think my transcript and scores are above average (not that scores are everything! I really think it’s about the writing and the development of original ideas here).
Weaknesses: I don’t have any “hooks” (not a minority, parents are college graduates, etc)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think it was because of my essay for the scholarship application. I really poured my whole heart into it and it was a topic I was passionate about. I also think my topic was unique and my development of ideas advanced. Because I am a finalist for the scholarship, I am automatically accepted into the school (even though the review processes are separate). Based on some of my friends who were rejected, I do not think I would have been accepted if I had not impressed the scholarship committee.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted- UTK, UK, Alabama, Alabama Huntsville, Miami of Ohio, Belmont
Deferred at UVA
General Comments: Apply for the Wash U scholarships! The application questions are similar to the Ivy League’s if you are already applying to those, but it will give you a leg up in admissions if the scholarship committee likes you. If they don’t the admissions is separate so that it won’t hurt you. Essentially admissions and scholarships are only tied if they want someone for a scholarship (which only considers your writing btw, not transcripts or ACT) who might not be a definite admit for the school at large (like me). Best of luck! Feel free to message me for advice or questions!
