Washington University in St. Louis Fall 2017 Transfer

Couldn’t find a thread for this, so I decided to create one. I’ll get the ball rolling for chancing

I’ll get in on this (please chance me);
College: top 40 liberal arts college
Prospective Sophomore
Major: Economics (hoping to get into Olin eventually, but I’ll be more than happy as an Econ major))
GPA: 3.93
ECs: Investment Club, Men’s Club Rugby, Improv Clyb
ACT: 32

HS: 3.15 (went to a nationally-ranked private school)

Will be sending in my app in the next few weeks

bump

Hey! I’ve actually been looking around for something like this. I haven’t finished my application yet, but I’m hoping to submit it soon.

College: University of Nebraska – Lincoln
Prospective sophomore
Major: Economics (I’m also looking to get into Olin later, as my school would not allow me to take the courses required for Olin. Very strange coincidence.)
College GPA: 4.0
HS GPA: 99.43/100 (valedictorian)
ECs: Nothing really for college. Been to a few club meetings and participated in a couple intramural leagues, nothing more. My high school ECs were plentiful. I was a state participant in golf, speech, and quiz bowl as well as president of NHS and four-year baseball all-star. I was hoping to walk-on to WashU’s baseball team.
ACT: 35
National Merit Scholar

My schedule was decently rigorous, too. I have taken one 300-level course, four 200-level courses, and the rest have been intro courses.

I believe my recommendation will be great. It’s from my Spanish professor, who noticed that I was advanced for the class I took my first semester and then helped me convince school officials to let me skip a few of the Spanish classes.

Do you have ANY idea how many people/what percentage of applicants will be accepted? I can’t seem to find any recent information about that. Also, I previously applied to WashU and was waitlisted. Hoping that might help me out.

@Racer33 The acceptance rate for transfer students at Wash U is about the same as UG (so around 10%). That being said, I think you have a great shot; you have very high grades in both high school and college, a high ACT score, and more. Really cannot find a weakness in the information you’ve put on here aside from the lack of college involvement. Can you chance me back? The info I have has changed a bit since I posted this around 6 weeks ago, so I’ll add it below.

College: top 25 LAC (according to Forbes), but top 40 according to U.S. News
Prospective Sophomore
Major: Economics
GPA: 3.9
ECs: Investment Club, Men’s Club Rugby, Alternative theater troupe, Social Business Venture Fund
ACT: 32
HS: 3.15
^Few Notes:

  1. I went to a nationally-ranked private school with a grade deflation problem (average Wash U admitted GPA from my high school was something like a 3.5 or 3.6; plus, I was admitted to my current college ED which has an average enrolled student ACT of 30 and median GPA of 3.6)
  2. I took a bunch of honors courses (that weren’t weighted, unfortunately)
  3. My grades dropped in high school from freshman year to sophomore year, but they’ve been steadily rising since then, with a big jump my first semester of college

Recs: very solid, professors I asked seemed genuinely saddened by my news and offered to talk to me if I wanted (got As in both their classes and participated a lot).

Essays: superb, went through a number of drafts on each of them and more or less poured my soul into the words

Apologies for the really long post, but I have to lay out all of this stuff to get as accurate an answer as possible

I think you have a great chance, as well. I would consider college GPA and essays to be the most important aspects of the application, and it looks like you’ll certainly stand out to admissions officers. Also, I think the raised GPA from high school to college will indicate to admissions that you are certainly a motivated student.

Then again, when acceptance rates are as low as they are at WashU, it’s nearly impossible for anybody to know. With so many ridiculously smart kids applying to schools like this, it becomes über-competitive. Do you think WashU (and other schools, for that matter) gives preference to prospective junior year transfers over sophomores?

Yeah, I’d have to believe that all schools on some level will (but some more than others). Having more credits under your belt shows that you’ve demonstrated your academic strength for a longer period of time. Even so, I think having a very high GPA in college right out of the gates will speak volumes to admissions people as well.

Also - for transfer acceptance rates at different colleges, look at their Common Data Set. It’ll show how many transfers applied that year (male and female), how many they accepted, and how many of those enrolled.

Wash U (2015-2016): 138/948 (14.6%), 73 enrolled

^It’s under Heading D - “Transfer Admission”

I’m surprised more people aren’t posting on this thread, but whatever. When are decisions supposed to go out?

Mid-May, so roughly 2 months from now…

hi, I’m new to this but here are my stats:

College: Small liberal arts school in Florida
Prospective Junior
Major: Biochemistry, Neuroscience minor
College GPA: 3.5
HS GPA: 4.26(W)
ECs: -at a division 2 school for soccer now, hoping to play at WUSTL
-treasurer of my sorority
ACT: 32

Most of my classes so far have been for my major, so I’ve had very hard schedules the past 3 semesters.

Recommendation from organic chemistry professor should be pretty good.

Hello all! I am new to cc and applying to a few schools. I figure I might as well post my stats and would love some honest feedback, no matter how harsh. I do not want to have any regrets when applying to schools. So, I am applying to schools that I know are a big reach.

Objective

HS GPA 3.0 – poor, I know:( I explain why in personal statement

MI Community College – 3.84 ( not including Mid-Term report, which is a 4.0)

Large upward trend

Fall 2015 – 3.668 (A- in Introductory french 1, but A in Intermediate 1 and A in IM 2 on MD report)

Winter 2016 – 3.82 (A- in introductory french 2, but A later in Intermediate 1 and A in IM 2 on MD report)

Summer 2016 – 4.0

Fall 2016 – 4.0

Winter 2016 – 4.0 on mid-term report

I have All A’s except for 3 A- and a B- in Fall 2015 in honors comp-1

I received an A in english comp-2.

My course load is very rigorous. It is as hard as it gets for a CC. Several honors courses

A’s in honors micro, honors gov, intermediate french 1, statistics, macro, and several more. I will graduate with an Associate of Arts this semester with honors.

Personal Statement

I poured my heart into it. In hs, both my parents lost their jobs, my home was foreclosed, we relied on others for housing, my family went on food stamps, and I worked at McDonald’s to support my family. I explained how this resulted in my fascination for all things related to government and as a result, wanting to major in poli sci with the intention of becoming a lawyer. I also explained how a higher education will allow me to support my mom. I think it explains my life, motives, and why I am doing what I am doing. TBH very proud of it. Overall 9.5/10 IMO

LOR-- I have three. One from French, Econ, and head of honors program and experiential learning. I believe they are all excellent.

EC’s – I will only list college.

Work at McDonald’s for several hours a week

Elected president of leadership club.

VP of an academic club

Volunteer work with Dementia Patients

Very involved in my chabad. I’m very active in the Jewish Community

Leader of Jewish youth group

Research this summer at U of M–Ann Arbor

Again, I realize this is not a chance me thread, but would love to interact with all of you about the transfer process

MISC

Accepted to Umich in early February for Fall 2017 and Brandeis (need-aware) for Spring 2017, but chose to stay at my cc. My brother is in HS and has already been admitted. Not sure if that helps or not because decisions are released after his commitment date.

@Racer33 Why didn’t you go to a better school right after HS?

@sPib9Kiv9anD0aWd I really wanted to go to WashU when I graduated. I looked at other schools, but couldn’t afford them. WashU’s aid works out much better for my family’s financial situation, so that was the only big-time school I applied to. They waitlisted me, and I never got in, so I had to settle for my backup.

So when do you think we hear back, I’m too lazy to look back at the threads from previous years. Also, is the expectation with you guys that the longer it takes to hear back from WUSTL the lower the probability you get in, or vice versa?

@sPib9Kiv9anD0aWd I’m thinking we’ll hear back by Mid-May. As for whether or not hearing early or late means anything, I don’t think it makes much of a difference; on a number of different transfer threads, I’ve seen people get rejected early on and get accepted late (I myself am an example of the former - I got a rejection email 17 days after it was confirmed as received).

Other threads made it seem like 1st or 2nd week of May. I’m really nervous and anxious for the decisions.
I’m a non-traditional student (went back when I was 22).
My HS grades/scores are average. My sister was dying during those years and my personal struggles with that made it difficult to keep up on grades. I explained that in my statment
I am at a small liberal arts school in MI currently. I am a biomedical science major with an emphasis on microbiology (it’s my school’s micro major). I also minor in statistics.
I applied to be a biology major at WashU.
I have a 3.8 GPA,
1 year research experience in micro-dealing with genome manipulation
EC:
Micro club
Pre MD/PhD club
Volunteer:
Hospice
Tutoring 5th graders in underprivileged school
ESL tutoring to refugee children
I also work as a statistics tutor in my school’s walk-in tutoring center

I think my personal statement was strong. Still nervous. This is the only school I applied to transfer to this year because it’s my top pick. If I don’t get in, I’ll try again in the fall.

@asimons1224

3.8 looks low; they only accept about 6%, but what do I know?

3.8 in university is low??? I should mind as well withdraw my application lol

I’ve looked at past threads and spoke to admissions, it seems like they base it less on the GPA number and more on the level of difficulty of your courses. So yes, it’s not a 4.0, but it’s still competitive given I’ve only taken STEM courses and a couple gen eds.
Plus I’m banking on the year of research experience in genetic engineering to be more valuable because of specific research/career goals outlined in my personal statement.
But truly, I don’t think any of us really know what makes a person stand out enough to get in.
