The workload at WashU can get pretty heavy, but this is probably the same for Jhu as well. But yes, generally WashU students seem to be pretty cheerful. When they stress, they stress out together. It’s quite an interesting experience to do your work in the library and join the conglomerate of stress-- it makes doing your work more bearable. For example, people keep each other awake (the ‘15 minute nap then wake me up’ technique), buy each other coffee, and stop and chat once in awhile.

DD and I visited both JHU and WashU last year. I can tell you there was a huge difference in the feeling of both campuses. At WashU I saw students gathered together, walking or eating, engaging with each other. At JHU I saw mostly students by themselves, either in the cafeteria or it seemed like everyone was running! Never saw as many people jogging at one school before. We asked the tour guide what the students did for fun and she seemed flummoxed, finally saying they’re either at the gym or the library. I could taste the intensity there. Although I think there are many people that thrive in that kind of atmosphere, DD did not apply to JHU.

Yes both campuses are beautiful (dining halls and food at WashU can’t be beat), but you really have to visit yourself and decide, because my views are totally subjective, and your experiences and expectations may be different.

I noticed quite bit of WUSTL advocating on CC lately and I wonder what is going on. One of those marketing compaigns?

Professor101…how are you helping me out on my question? Sorry, but can you try to be helpful here. Please give your opinion and one that is relevant to the question? Thank you.

THank you Lassie3 for sharing your experience. It seems like all the consensus is that WashU is a better school for premeds, due to happier and more supportive students, quality of life, and success rate into med school. JHU is a great premed school, too. but I really want to make sure I’m not going to be stressing out without a support network or being grumpy about anything else but schoolwork. I work really really hard, but I enjoy time with people as well…

Professor no marketing campaign here, on the contrary, DD has not even committed to WashU yet. In fact, since it has been a year and a half since she visited the campus she will visit there and also her other top choice, University of Rochester before she makes her final decision. It is interesting though on these boards, any other school that is highly praised it’s considered to be school spirit, but in WashU’s case it’s a marketing ploy!!?!

Based on what you said. you are not suited for either and should look for a LAC.

As far as prestige is concerned, JHU>WUSTL.

So, students who are looking for happiness, for whom prestige is of secondary concern, should go to LACs?

Haha, you are absolutely right! ;)

“As far as prestige is concerned, JHU>WUSTL.”

I agree. JHU is more prestigious and well known that WUSTL. It doesn’t make it better, it’s just a fact.

“It is interesting though on these boards, any other school that is highly praised it’s considered to be school spirit, but in WashU’s case it’s a marketing ploy!!?!”

Perhaps it’s all of the mailings?

"I noticed quite bit of WUSTL advocating on CC lately and I wonder what is going on. One of those marketing compaigns? "

Professor101, I wonder the same thing. These high school students need to realize that WUSTL’s name recognition virtually dwarfs John Hopkins’s (international) reputation. Although I don’t care much about JHU, I know for certain that JHU > WUSTL.

Hey,

**Sorry, but I got my question answered. I’m going to choose Washington University in St. Louis over Johns Hopkins IF I get into both. So yea, I don’t need any more help on this. I’ll be applying to other schools as well and will be researching those. **

tenishs, please do not turn my thread into a prestige thread. Instead, please provide helpful information as to why students at JHU might be happier than students at WashU.

Again, thank to you those who helped. While deciding, I looked at everything from quality of student life, research opporutnities, how premeds do in getting into medical school, the feel of the campus, and a little of prestige. I just like WashU much better in the end. JHU is still a great school however.

“I noticed quite bit of WUSTL advocating on CC lately and I wonder what is going on. One of those marketing compaigns?”

And I also noticed quite a bit of WUSTL haters here. I wonder what is going on. People who are still bitter about getting rejected or waitlisted? =P

WashU is the bomb!!!
My cousin graduated from there and I went for the graduation ceremony. I was like… what??? I felt like royalty, the food was goood. everything about the place!!!

Johns Hopkins is a real good school too. My friend goes there and she loves it. It’s challenging but the medicine academics there is phenominal. Heard there are a lot of geeks though. hahah. but for medicine JHU is the best pick…

My oldest son attended JHU and loved it. He was a computer engineering major but had alot of friends and one of his former roommates that ARE currently attending medical school. JHU has a large number of students that go the traditional science major route, but many also majored in BME (very tough) or Public Health ( I believe JHU is the top ranked program). I heard that JHU’s placement rate is over 90% for med school. It is a very competitive environment- however my son’s friends totally debunked that myth of the cutthroat environment. They all studied alot- but socialized as well. Life is intense (the forth floor down in the library the students have pillows/ alarm clocks, etc- but they also have higher than average MCAT scores. Over my son’s 4 years we were at the campus at least 20 times and I don’t remember everyone running around. The food used to be bad, but they made changes to that. The amount of research opportunities that JHU has is second to none, and that is for many fields not just science related. It is a very beautiful campus, and you can’t drive through it therefore you get a sense of community. It is surrounded by some beautiful neighborhoods and a so-so one, but there are some definately sketchy areas of Baltimore…street smarts are essential here.
I know that his friends would not have gone anywhere else and that JHU rec carries great weight. Yes with the small med school size JHU only accepts 10%(?) of their own students (more than from any other school) and many of the student like my son’s roommate are left to attend such “lowly” institutions as UCLA :)

hahah thanks sortasmart. Love your enthusiasm/positivity!

JHU mom, thank you very much for sharing your experience! I’m glad your son had a time at JHU; he sounds like a happy and motivated student. I actually have made my decision from reading these posts. For now I really think Washington University in St. Louis would be a better fit. Also, I just want to do biology and premed, not really interested in engineering like BME.

So yea, uh guys, I’'m good for now. Thank you guys again for helping out. No more posts please because I always want to reply (politely) to each one and that’s a hassle. I appreciate everyone’s opinion. As of now, I just feel like WashU is a better fit as my ideal premed college, and I think I already gave the reasons why above.

Thanks again guys.
