Washington University in St. Lous vs. Vanderbilt

Post 19: Yes, the housing on campus is very nice. The question is, do they have enough now for all of the upperclassmen who want it? A few years ago there were complaints that there was not, but that may not still be the case. Does anyone know?

I have spent a lot of time on both campuses, and I would definitely go to WashU over Vandy. While both are very respected schools and have wonderful campuses and opportunities for students, all you have to do is walk onto the WashU campus and feel like you are in a close-knit, friendly community. You always hear students say they picked WashU over numerous Ivies for one reason- the people. Not a lot of schools can say that. I know that acceptance into WashU is a great honor, so speaking from a completely objective POV I say don’t pass this opportunity up. I don’t think you will regret it at all.

I don’t know that much about the housing situation for washu upperclassmen, but I do know that they’re just opening two brand new dorms for upperclassmen this year

housing is garunteed all four years. A while back they had a problem with overenrollment which strained the system, but I think that was just a fluke and they’ve gotten things smoothed out

^^^I am happy to hear that.

Yeah and for many students, its not what goes on in the light of day that one needs to worry about. So let’s be a little more real about the “southern hospitality” and the old school southern “gentry.”

“The anti-South sentiment on CC has become so predictable that I am coming to the conclusion that CC does more harm than good to students who ask questions on this forum. Vanderbilt is the warmest, friendliest campus I have ever visited or been associated with in my many years as a student (two undergrad. degrees and PhDs), post-doc, faculty member and spouse of an administrator and faculty member. I know numerous international and permanent resident alien undergraduates, and I have heard no complaints about unfriendliness or being left out.”

I am sure you can find individuals with great experiences, but generally speaking from the MANY students I have come across, it is not always the case. But you are right it is not just the south - look at “liberal” California and what went on at UCSD. However, there are unwritten “rules” that are very much in effect down south, that if you unknowingly or unwittingly violate-can cause problems.

^^^Please, by all means fill us in on your own personal experiences “down south”–that is, if you have ever been “down south”.

And of course, if you have ever been to Nashville or Vanderbilt, your own personal observations would be most welcome to the OP, I’m sure.

Here’s my traumatic experience in The South as an international, atheistic, Asian student.

-You can’t order iced tea. You order sweet tea.
-Get fried chicken. It’s good.
-Help some strangers carry their BBQ gears into their pickup truck, and they’ll reward you with 20 pounds of delicious ribs. True story.
-Oh, and don’t expect the pet store to keep your puffer fish over the summer. A nice old lady with two cute kids will take care of it for you, and she’ll keep you updated about your fish’s progress by email.
-If you don’t like to party, smoke a pre-embargo Cuban cigar, play chess, and debate about the existence of god with Christian friends. It’s a world-class institution. You’re allowed to be different.

What’s the problem with the south? I love it here. Jeez…y’all.

Vanderbilt is significantly more prestigious than WUSTL.

This is an old thread! Why resurrect it?

@informative

I disagree (no offense meant ;-))
WUSL is one of the.best schools in the country.
the only reason vanderbilt is considered “better” is because it is in a relatively well-known area.
Wash u in st. Louis is in missouri.
The location prevents it.from being know to.top candidates.
I for.one want to attend the school ;-)

But to each his own opinion
