Hello:

I am thinking about applying for ED in the Fall 2009 for 2010.

I have:

3.95 UW
4.25 Weighted
32 ACT
did not take SAT or subject tests
very good recs
lots of volunteer work
some clubs at school

I would be applying to the Olin Business School. I am going to visit in June and have set up an interview at Olin.

Are my chances reasonable?

Thanks for your input.

Sure, they are reasonable. What you don’t say is how many AP/Honors courses you have taken and plan to take. All these extremely selective schools look at how much you have challenged yourself based on what your school offers. Other than that, if you are sure WUSTL is your #1 choice, then ED is the way to go.

Based on the information provided I would say you have an excellent chance ED. However, like fallenchemist stated, it would help if you listed some of the accelerated courses you have taken and it would be nice to know your class rank.

I don’t want to be obnoxious and start a new thread with my stats, so I was wondering if you guys could chance me as well for applying ED this fall.

I am currently finishing my junior year of high school, but these are my stats so far. Oh, and I’m not sure if it matters, but I’m an Asian female.

Academics:
GPA: 4.0 unweighted, 4.8 weighted
3rd in my class (approximately 400 people)
AP Classes-
Sophomore- Calc I & Calc II (5 on both)
Junior- AP Statistics, AP Psychology, AP Biology I and II, expect a 5 on AP Bio and Psych
Senior- Expecting to take AP Environmental, AP Chemistry I and II, and AP Language

Test Scores:
SAT I Math: 760
SAT I Reading: 730
SAT I Writing: 690
Total: 2180

Taking the SAT Subject tests for Math 1 and Biology next week, expect over 700 on both.

I have a scientific internship at the National Cancer Institute at Fort Detrick throughout this summer and throughout my senior year, so I will have a lot of research experience and hands on experience (PCR, gel electrophoresis, etc).

Extra curriculars-
National Honor Society
Key Club
Junior Club
Sophomore Club
Freshman Club
In the Maryland Distinguished Scholar Program
Have a Certificate of Meritorious Service
Volunteer at the nearby elementary school
Volunteer at a Chinese school (teaching piano)
Varsity Indoor and Outdoor track since freshman year
Cross Country
Made the first cut for the National Merit Scholarship, waiting for the next cut
Some other stuff

@amy - If you are sure Wash U is your first choice and apply ED, I would say you are as close to a sure thing as there is. However, if you are not sure and want to apply RD, they might waitlist you just because you could also most likely get into most of the top 10 schools. If you read through other threads on here, you will see this is not unusual. But clearly you are qualified for Wash U (and pretty much any university) assuming you get good recs and nail the essay. Good luck!

Thanks for the help, fallenchemist. I’m sure my rec will be fine, but I’m not really that great at essays, so we’ll see how that goes.

As for ED, what happens if you don’t get the financial aid that you want? My family has a low income (<$60,000 that most schools seem to deem “low income”) and my brother is in college as well. I plan on going to med school, so I really have to get in to undergrad for pretty much free.

Also, do you know if I’d have a chance of getting into the University Scholars Program in Medicine? Or how difficult it is to maintain the 3.8 GPA at Wash U required in the USPM?

Sorry to bombard you with questions. I really appreciate your help though.

Amy - np, but I don’t know much about the university scholars program. But of course no one can say how difficult it is to maintain a GPA, it depends on you. I suspect you can do it though.

As far as ED and financial aid, if you don’t get what you need they cannot hold you to the ED. Clearly no school would take you to court anyway, but it states somewhere that you can go elsewhere if you cannot afford it. However, you are correct that Wash U does in fact use that $60,000 figure for no-loan grant aid:

[WUSTL to expand financial aid for low-income families](<a href=“Newsroom - The Source - Washington University in St. Louis”>http://news-info.wustl.edu/news/page/normal/11103.html)

So you should be a good candidate for this. You should be aware that Wash U is not need blind; they are in fact need aware. However, you are a very strong candidate so don’t get hyper about it. I think you have an excellent chance. You should also apply for as many scholarships as possible. Talk to the financial aid office about all the ones possible. You have to be nominated for a Danforth, the others you can just apply for. Again, see about the procedure for that.

As far as your essay, there is nothing wrong with working with your English teachers on it. It has to be original and your own of course, but they can proofread and make suggestions to make it as strong as possible. So don’t wait until the last minute for this.

Just approach it systematically and you will be fine, but you do have to take the initiative and dig out information sometimes. It is worth it, believe me.
