I just received an email from the University of Washington that I was selected for verification. I am an out of state applicant and therefore cannot receive any institutional aid from the school. Also, I am not eligible for a Federal Pell grant because of my parent’s salary and the only thing I am eligible for is $27000 in federal loans over the course of my four years in school. I believe that I am receiving the most minimal aid possible. Correct me if I am wrong.
Anyways, all this leads to my question: is being chosen for verification still absolutely random? Why would they pick me, of all applicants, to verify? I don’t think it was FAFSA themselves that chose me for verification because I do not see an asterisk on my student aid report. I don’t care that I was chosen, but I am just curious why.
Just do it. You can’t get the federal loan until you get the verification materials sent in.
My kid was full pay just about at his private university, and we were selected for verification EVERY year. All he got was the federally funded loan. He didn’t get a dime of need based aid. Our EFC exceeded the cost of attendance.
Just send the verification request materials in.
Some schools verify every student, some 1 in 3. If you want the loans, you have to give them the docs they ask for.
I understand that I need to give what they ask for to get loans. My parents have already ordered a transcript from the IRS. I was just wondering why I was picked. Anyways, thank you for your help! @twoinanddone @thumper1

It’s random. Some folks get picked randomly.
Then some folks get picked because something doesn’t align on their submitted forms.
Sounds like you were a random pick…just like we were.
