Washington and Jefferson in Pennsylvania has been sending S#3 a lot of mail. Does any one know anything about this school?

It's a smallish LAC located in Washington, PA, about 35 miles south of Pittsburgh. It has a pretty good reputation of putting kids into medical schools and other graduate programs, although I don't know specific numbers.

What specific sort of things are you looking for?

My son is looking for a smallish school with a good business/economics/international studies program, and possibly an opportunity to play DIII soccer.

Two of our finer Presidents, for sure.

W&J is a nice LAC in Washington, PA. It is right in town. My son has competed there a couple of times in sports and we've gone to watch him. My felling is that it could be a suitcase campus, just because it is fairly popular with the PIttsburgh area kids and it's only an hour from about 2 million people. Washington has seen better days, but there has been some revitalization over the past few years. The dorms we walked by looked near new, but if you get a half dozen blocks from the campus in the wrong direction you're not in a very nice neighborhood. The academics are good, and I know they have a very high placement rate for grad and med schools. W&J grads might not carry a lot of national brand clout to them, but in the Pittsburgh area it is certainly one of the most respected schools around, probably behind CMU and maybe Pitt, although they Pitt and W&J are so dissimilar I don't think you can compare them. I think people would here would hold it in about the same regard as say Allegheny, with about 6 feet less snow a winter. And Washington is a lot nicer town than Meadville. It is still on my Ds back burner list for next year. A little closer than she'd like though.

Another school in the area that is thought of highly in business, although not too sure about international, is St Vincent's in Latrobe, PA. My company hires a decent amount of business grads from there. Warning, if you get on their mailing list your mailman will be out for back surgery. A coworker has a son going there to play soccer in the fall. I have another friend whose freshman son in on the new football team there. St Vincent's is the training camp site for the Pittsburgh Steelers, so the athletic facilities are pretty nice. All in all, it certainly doesn't have the rep that W&J does though.

W&J - A few years ago got a new pres who revitalized the place. Built new dorms, new buildings at other end of campus as well. He left to become pres Bucknell, to the chagrin of the WJ commnity. Plus side: very small classes, lots of attention, new town houses for pre law, pre med etc. Very nice folks, offering priority applications and merit awards. Well known Pitt area, Young mayor of Pitt is W&J alum. Cons: Very small, regional (yes, many go home on weekends for dinner and come back etc) Washington kind of gray, dull place, not much there. Some kids said they were there as parents didn't want them in Pitt.

Cons: Very small school,
