WashU admissions

I’ve heard some odd stories of some people with average GPA’s(3.0) but great EC’s, being able to get into Wustl. I don’t know how many people from that school told me, but it’s quite a bit. So what do you guys think? Is WashU, one of those kind of schools, where EC’s, with a strong essay and rec’s, could overthrow the lower GPA?

WashU is one of those schools where constantly calling them and writing to them will REALLY help you get in. You usually have to show a VERY STRONG INTEREST in WashU to get accepted

And this answer is based on????

I have no idea where Sozo got that info. It is logical, however. Washington is a perenial safety for the ivies and thus, the yeild is not exceptionally high. By admitting kids who show a real interest, they can assure themselves of

a.) students who really want to go there and who do not consider the school a safety
b.) a higher yield
c.) and a higher ranking in the US news world reports due to the inflated yield.

Afterall, you might as well admit the kids who are sure to attend rather than the ones who will turn you down for a bigger name.

Mu son's college counselor told us that unless you apply ED to Wash, which they take as a sign of REAL interest, you should just expect to get waitlisted. This from a very elite prep school that sends over 20% of seniors to Ivy's each year.

"This from a very elite prep school that sends over 20% of seniors to Ivy's each year."

Exacty. Your son's school probably has a reputation among UWashington adcoms of snubbing UWash to go to an ivy league school. Again, why would they accept you if your just going to turn them down?

Stories circulate about every school. To understand your chances here or anywhere, look at the averages. If any part of your stats is not at or above, and you are not an athlete, URM, dev. candidate, legacy or someone with national/international honors in your EC, your chances aren't great.

Once you have appropriate stats, demonstrated interest is more important at some schools than others.

My gc told me I couldn't apply to WashU unless I visited. I've heard also that WashU really cares about points of contact...they also like to contact you a lot..it's been a while but I remember getting postcards from them everyday...

Does that mean they want you, if they are sending you mail just about everyday?

Very interesting that a school counselor can tell a student where they can apply??? Who is paying for this trip? I have never heard of this.

Kinglin: No. They send everyone and their grandmother mailings. That's how they have been able to lower their acceptance rate over the years (by providing false hope).

Demonstrating interest is very important for WashU. That's where the advice to visit, write, call, and apply ED comes from.

Truth be told....they want anybody who can click and pay.....warm bodies or even close to warm body.

Is it really that surprising? I think I could have applied if I really pushed it, but I saw her point-- I was just looking for a match anyway and already had a bunch of reaches. She also told me I shouldn't apply EA to Yale, but by the time early apps came around I had changed my mind anyway.

Don't have a heart attack but,
my school also has a policy where you cannot apply elsewhere if you get into a school EA.

Wow. Are you sure it's a high school and not a concentration camp?

Well, it's not perfect but the early policy accomplishes three things
a) Forces students to be really sure that they like their EA school and are not just applying to jump on the early bandwagon.
b) Lessens competition for the rest of the grade. "we are a community. be considerate" etc.
c) Less recs for teachers to send/gc's to fill out.

Another factor is that it is a private school and finaid is not a factor for most of the students.

I guess it's just playing a strategic college admissions game. About 25% of each class goes to Ivies.

Do they not understand the difference bwn ED and EA? Why would you restrict yourself to one EA??

WashU has got to be the king of colleges who have gotten tons of kids they'll never accept to apply (but repeated we want yo mailings) to up their selectivity numbers. But in the end, I wonder, do most take this school seriously?

does anyone really want to go to st louis? sadly im leaving to there tomorrow...not to visit WashU though

If you have any questions about St. Louis let me know.

I wouldn't really know, but maybe this helps: I had a 1390, 12 APs, 3 5s on AP exams, and 6 extracurriculars with leadership positions, and I still got rejected, after being waitlisted. I guess it is a hard school to get into.
