WashU Olin v. UMich Ross (preferred admit)

I am deciding between these two schools. I know WashU is a stronger all around school, but Ross is much more highly renowned than Olin. I liked both schools upon visiting but am a bit concerned about the career placement at Olin because I have heard it is a high notch down from Ross', especially in finance. Is this true, and can anybody elaborate? thanks

I would love opinions on this as well.

Go to Ross. Michigan is a target school for Finance. Also, WUSTL is NOT a stronger school all around academically than Michigan. Some of you posters drink the USNWR coolaid a bit too much.

IMO, WUSTL is a stronger school overall at the undergraduate level. However, for finance/ibanking Ross might have the edge. I suppose it depends on what kind of career you are seeking.

Here is a link to Olin’s placement stats:
http://www.olin.wustl.edu/docs/WCC/employmentBSBA.pdf

Almost doesn’t matter for undergrad. For MBA programs, or if you wanted a PhD or master’s in finance, then Ross has a better argument for being more highly-regarded. The amount of finance classes you will take (6 or 7) is so small… aside from the fact that you will learn the same material and have similar opportunities at both schools.

Vist both and see what fits you better… vibe of the student body, campus culture, location, etc… but yeah you really will not notice a difference in quality/opportunities for one major at the undergrad level.

@gatsby11 I don’t know what career I’m seeking but if it tins out to be finance/ib how much of a disadvantage would it be to be at washu v Ross? Are they at the same level for other business fields?

I think Olin is an all-around phenomenal school for undergrad business. Olin Students rank higher than Wharton for SAT scores and it is a top feeder school into the top 35 MBA programs according to BusinessWeek. So if your goal is to go into consulting or one of the more conventional business fields and go on to a top grad program, Olin is absolutely on par with Ross.

Perhaps someone with more direct knowledge of Olin can chime in, but it is my impression that Ross places slightly better into the top IBanking jobs on Wall Street (this is based purely on anecdotal observations, so take it with a grain of salt). That said, I do think a fair amount of Olin students get internships and full time jobs at the big firms. To my knowledge, Goldman, BofA, Citi, JP Morgan, Wells Fargo, and Deutsch Bank recruit and interview on campus, so there are definitely opportunities in finance.

Any Olin students out there? Is this a fair assessment?

Olin’s a good school, but there’s literally 5 different undrgrad finance courses offeredered (in total)…which to me doesn’t seem like much.
