We visited a few weekends ago for an accepted students weekend and my daughter will be attending in the fall - yay! I’m a worried mom too…the thing that has me concerned is the transportation to the airport. The recommended method on the Wash U website is to call a cab but I personally have had some strange cabbies. My daughter is very young looking (a parent during the weekend thought she was a child genius!). Can anyone put my mind at ease?
I would not worry about taking a cab, but my son (who is graduating next week) has always taken the train to and from the airport. There are actually two stops for the train on campus. It is very easy, I have taken the train myself. At vacation times she can probably share a cab with another student going to the airport and there are cabs waiting at popular times. We live in Phoenix and one of the many many things that we have loved about the school is how easy it is to get to and from the airport.
My daughter graduated a year ago and she had no trouble getting to and from the airport. She usually took the train but a few times, especially when she went back in Jan. and it was cold, took a cab. Really, no problems either way.
My son has shared cabs to the airport. He has also taken the train. Your daughter should be fine.
When do kids get login info? Just got the mail about filling out health form and necessary immunization. But it says that can’t print for. Until get login info. And can’t excess dorm info without form. Currently have dr appointment for D end of July. Will probably need to reschedule for earlier. But need to have a printout of form first
@momworried My daughter submitted all of her enrollment information at the end of April and she received an email a couple of days later which told her how to activate her WUSTL key/password.
Thanks @VandyAlum93. I actually never asked my daughter if she has it. I kind of assumed that she didn’t. She was early decision so she might have all the info. I feel very out of the loop since all the info comes to her email and she rarely shares any info. I wonder if there’s a way for parents to get all the important email info also.
@worriedmom The best way for you to get the important emails would be for you to have your daughter give you access to her email account. But I don’t recommend that. She should be able to navigate this. Let her know you are available. Allow her to seek you out as needed.
I want to second @newcrew42.
Similarly, for a lot of these questions (ie “how does my daughter/son get to campus? I’m afraid of her taking the train/cab/whatever”), you really need to let your kid take charge. They’re adults. They should be able to handle going away to school. Put the helicopter blades away and relax.
Unless they’re asking for advice or asking you to help advocate for them when someone is being ridiculous, they’ll be fine.
For example, my dad directly called the SHS Director when SHS had a stick up their rear and was refusing to sign a state form for me that I desperately needed. Parental help is good when “real” adults are treating your kids poorly and the system is not working as it should. Not for basic life skills that your kid should be learning anyway.
My D got her 4th choice for dorms yesterday. She was a little disappointed. Can anyone tell me about Rutledge dorms? Any info would be greatly appreciated. I looked it up online and saw the floor plans but no room dimensions. It was built in 1964. How run down is it? Do they periodically update the older dorms? Are there carpets on the floor? Is it central air or air conditioning unit per room or suite? What is the location of Rutledge dorm in respect to classes and dining halls?
@momworried Here is an old thread that has the room dimensions: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/washington-university-st-louis/959965-dimensions-of-dorm-rooms.html
And here is a map: http://south40initiative.wustl.edu/explore/map/ Rutledge doesn’t look too far from the food (Bear’s Den is in South 40 House) or the tunnel to main campus where the classrooms are (the tunnel is near Gregg House).
All of the dorms in the South 40 are pretty close to the Dining Hall. My daughter was in Lee as a freshman and it was one of the older dorms. But it was still nicer than some dorms we had seen at other colleges. She had a great experience and never felt like she was in a second class living environment. If I remember correctly, they had very nice posteurpedic mattresses. So I’m sure once your D gets there, she will forget that Rutledge was her 4th choice and just enjoy it. If you can, tell her to focus more on the people and less on the building.
Where on the WashU site can I find out which books are required for which course. I looked at the book store and the course listings and it’s not there. She’s trying to order books now that she registered during SOAR.
When can we start shipping her stuff to campus?
@momworried - Your daughter’s Class Schedule page in Webstac should show a list of the required books.
@momworried
It actually is on courselistings. courses.wustl.edu to be specific.
To find that info, find the class, then click on “details.”
When you hover over the relevant section, a “books” button will appear in blue. If you click it, it will take you to the listing for the book.
The ISBN should be listed (universities are legally required to provide this information), which will allow you to search for (much) cheaper prices. I personally always used bookfinder4u.
If courses.wustl doesn’t list a book, it either means the prof has yet to select one or there won’t be a required book for the class.
If you still can’t find the books on courses, feel free to list a few classes and I (or someone who beats me to it) can check for you. It can be a bit weird to navigate.
Should we buy her books now or wait till first day of class. She mentioned that some kids are saying not to buy till first day because sometimes professors say you don’t need the book. But then if we wait she won’t have her book for couple of weeks potentially. I usually buy online. For my older son I always bought ahead but don’t know if WashU is different.
My D usually buys them ahead of time but she buys what she thinks she’ll need. For the courses she isn’t sure about , she waits until the first day and then decides.
D is strongly considering applying to Wash U ED. Can a WU parent tell me about disability services at WU for kids with LD like ADD.? How accommodating are they of accommodations (eg., time-and-a-half)? How helpful are they with time management issues, etc? The office is run by an attorney rather than a psychologist, which concerns me. Should I be concerned about how helpful this office will be?
D is a freshman. I remember reading somewhere that silver meal plan is more then enough. That they actually have points left over at the end. After about a month of school my D said she was getting short on points. She stopped getting breakfasts at the school and instead started buying cereal to catch up. So essentially she’s eating 2 meals for points. Is she doing something wrong? Can I upgrade her plan to gold for spring semester?
