WashU places to live

As an incoming grad student, I've been looking around at different living options, and found some information offered by the school helpful, and some not so much.

I have entered my name in a roommate potluck, but don't expect to much of it. I also looked through official roommate listings on websites for WashU, as well as the Quadrangle Housing website search, both of which were lacking useful information.

I've even been invited to stay with friends about 2 1/2 miles (8 minute drive) south of campus in a house. Only I'm hoping to live within walking distance.

But my question revolves around known places: Is it a good idea to live around the Loop? Or is the Central West End a better option? From what I've read, the further north of the Loop, the less safety.

I've also checked out a few apartments, with the Embassy and the Chesterfield scoring high in terms of satisfaction, while the West End City apartment looks good, but with lots of dissatisfaction.

Before you respond, I WILL be visiting to see them in person, so I'm not relying on the internet alone, but any helpful advice/caution would be MUCH appreciated.

sent you a PM!

Are you going to be at the Danforth campus or at the School of Medicine?

Danforth campus

The commute between the two campuses is pretty fast on the metro. I would personally avoid the loop, although it’s probably among the cheapest options. CWE is nice, tending to be more highrise-ish buildings with a fair bit of nightlife and good eats nearby. The Demun neighborhood south of campus is also rather nice place, but quieter with more 3-4 floor buildings except for the Dorchester. UCity between campus and the loop (IE. Greenway, Wash Ave, etc.) tends to have more undergrads I think. Skinker-deBaliviere has a lot of Quadrangle properties, some are amazing, some not so much. A lot of people also live on Forsyth between Big Bend and Clayton.
