WashU Trucking--Are they any good?

I can't believe my D is almost finished with freshman year! We live in the northeast, so we want her to store her things in St. Louis over the summer and ship home whatever she will need at home. She is planning to live in the South 40 again next year. Have any of you had experience with WashU trucking? Would you recommend using them for this and if not, any other suggestions?

Our S used them during all 3 summers--we heard no complaints from him, so I would say they are just fine.

UTrucking is a good option if you don't want to find storage elsewhere off campus and figure out how to get your stuff there and back. It can be more expensive, but it's very convenient. I know the owners, and they run a good business.

Another often unthought of, but important convenience is that UTrucking will pick up your heavy boxes from your room and take them downstairs for you. I packed up my room by myself last year and was really relieved that I didn't have to carry them all downstairs as well....They also deliver them upstairs in the fall. So far I haven't lived in a dorm with an elevator, so it has been very convenient.

Wash U Trucking rocks.

Wow, yet another thing that "runs like butter" at WashU!! Should I tell my D that she needs to contact WashU trucking soon, or does the service send around flyers and info to the kids?

Worked for my daughter. It was more expensive than her taking to UPS herself, but she did a combination of things, based on how easy/difficult/big the things she had were to store and ship. It's particularly good for freshmen who don't have access to cars.

Here's their site, FYI:

<a href="https://www.utrucking.com/summer/index.asp%5B/url%5D">https://www.utrucking.com/summer/index.asp</a></p>

It's a student run business, and not managed by the university.

Thanks oncampus. I just checked out the website and there is a 5% discount if you register before April 6. Thanks to all for the timely info!

It is a relief to know about this service, but it is pretty expensive. $50/month to store a box, even a big one, seems like a lot. Also, it looks like it would be cheaper to ship it two ways than to store it for three months? That doesn't make much sense. Anyone have any money saving tips for dealing with them or other solutions?

It's $45 a U-Trucking box for the entire summer.....
Last year I stored 6 boxes for just over 200 dollars for the entire summer.

Man, that makes a LOT more sense. I just mis-read it as a monthly rate. Thanks.

We're also in Northeast and our S is a freshman. I've started to nudge him about WashU Trucking. Not a doubt that he's going to use them to store his stuff. Thanks for the heads-up about 5% discount before April 6th....another reason to nudge him again!

If you have access to a car or are willing to rent a truck (and move stuff in and out yourself), you can find the cheapest local storage rates at <a href="http://www.publicstorage.com/%5B/url%5D">http://www.publicstorage.com/</a> . I did that freshman year with 3 friends (5x5x9 high unit), and the cost with truck rental for move out came to be about $70 per person. It did take a lot of work, and was hot, but it saved quite a bit of money. I'll emphasize the work part - I lived in a dorm without an elevator.

I would highly recommend Utrucking. They have been around since before I was a freshman, and even when my sister went to Wash U 8 years ago! Their prices are average for full service summer storage and shipping, but their care and service have been great! I didn’t use them freshman year (regretted it), but used them every year since with no problems.

Most importantly, I came to Wash U to study and do well in my classes. Moving all my stuff out myself I thought was a poor use of my time, when I could/should be studying.

This is the no hassle way to go. They have been reliable, responsible and have done the work for our student so that he could concentrate in his studies during the spring finals. They provide the boxes, the lifting and the redelivery in the fall and they do it according to your schedule. While it may be a little cheaper to rent a storage unit and the truck to get it there and to pick up your stuff in the fall - you need to do the labor and have the time to do it on top of packing and unpacking.

Unfortunately, now that airlines charge for bags, UTrucking becomes an even better deal. If you ship via UPS or Fedex - you still have to get your items to the shipping point and pick them up in the fall - Utrucking does that “schlepping” for you - especially when you don’t have elevators.

I echo what many others have said. We’ve had positive experiences both in getting our son’s items to school in the fall of freshman year and in storing items over the next two summers.
