washu v. vanderbilt (as a premed)

i was accepted at washu as a freshman in the class of 2015 and just put down my deposit there. however, i was waitlisted at vanderbilt and think i have a pretty good chance of getting in. regardless, i have NO clue which to choose.

vanderbilt has been a top choice of mine for three years, but ive been forcing myself to get excited about washu and now its hard to still be excited about vandy. also, its hard to still want a place that told you they dont want you.

i want to do pre-med, maybe with a major in math, greek life, community service...

helllllppppppppp!!!! any advice is appreciated :/

thanks, but for me money isnt the issue or really even a part of the equation. ive been working since i could to pay for college myself and i finally can.

I suggest you stay on Vanderbilt’s waitlist since you like it a lot. They have not said they don’t want you–if they didn’t want you, they would have rejected you. Heck, the competition was so tough this year that they rejected people they wanted. So, take a look at the admissions blog and follow the advice they give for increasing your chance of getting off the waitlist.

However, you have done well to get admitted to Wash U, and if that is where you go, you will love it. It is an excellent school, and the students who attend there love it.

Stay calm, check out the VU admissions blog and send them whatever they want. I don’t think anyone’s chances of getting off the waitlist are particularly good, but optimism never hurts, unless it causes you to fail to get excited about the great opportunity that you already have for sure.

both schools are really good, but I think WashU is a little better.

WUSTL is arguably one of the best universities for aspiring doctors. I would personally recommend it over Vanderbilt in your case.

I think Vanderbilt would prepare you very well to be a doctor as well and its definitely a lot more fun than Wash U. A good friend of mine actually transferred from Wash U to Duke because he thought the social life there wasn’t so good and thinks Duke’s is significantly better. I would say that Vandy is even more fun than Duke so I think its the clear choice if you’re looking for a balance between academics and fun.

I would recommend Wash U. It has a great reputation for pre-med. Wash U has math, Greek life and community service. Biggest difference is no D1 sports. I think the problem is the waitlist. As long as you sit on a wastlist you will be focus on a decision that may never be available. If you commit to Wash U wou will focus on orientation, housing, classes, rushing and activities. You will like it better.

I would stay on the Vandy waitlist and hope you get in. Both schools are outstanding, but the Vanderbilt med center offers incredible research opportunities (even for undergrads) and Nashville is a great town. The D1/SEC sports scene makes for an awesome college experience.
