WashU vs. Emory

Alright, I have no idea where to go to school at the moment. I've pretty much narrowed my list down to Emory and WashU, but there are so many advantages and disadvantages to each school.

I plan on double or triple majoring in English and Business or Econ. Emory has a better business school than WashU, but the overall academic atmosphere at WashU is ahead of that at Emory.

In the city comparison, Atlanta totally wins over St. Louis, so I really need some good arguments for WashU.

Can anyone try and convince me to attend one or the other of these colleges? I'm at a crossroads and I have no clue which way to go.

A family friend went to WashU and he is smart (34 ACT, 2310 SAT), valedictorian of his class, captain of his basketball/track team, very involved in the community, etc. He went to WashU and was at the bottom of the class. Also, he is from the South and hated the cold Missouri weather. He just disliked WashU because he could not keep up with the work and stand the climate;however, he stayed all four years because they offered a full ride. I think he was not prepared for WashU because the school he came from was not the best public school in the area so it did not fully prep for the college workload. He said he had a hard time with the math and science courses because the classes were more advanced and fast-paced.

Sylinder, my top two choices were Emory and WashU. Emory has been my number one pick since the beginning but I wouldn't have been unhappy at Washington. That said, WashU offered me a slightly better (3k more per year) than Emory, but that is negligible. Plus, Emory has a great program called Emory Advantage that makes my last three years almost free.
The weather in Saint Louis is HORRIBLE (my sister lives there) and although WashU is a good school, I feel that Emory is right for me and that it is more suitable for an aspiring businessperson (I am going to b-school, and law school as well).
I think you will make the right choice. Just reading your post, I think you really want to go to Emory.
EMORY '12!

hey i might be able to provide some insight. i recently spent 4 days at emory and 3 days at WashU trying to make my decision, so maybe this can help...
Emory: wonderful weather, nice people, really cool/modern buildings, huge endowment, alot of attention to the student, quality professors, self-contained campus that alot of people seemed to like, and atlanta is a real cool area
WashU: GORGEOUS campus with absolutely beautiful buildings. very bright, involved kids, not great weather, fun social life w/ liberal attitude towards drinking, bschool is known as easiest there, and quickly becoming more and more recognized on a national scale.

personally, i'll be going to emory because they offered me money and the bschool is rated better. that aside though, the two schools are very comprable, and either one will afford you many opportunities once you graduate because they are such well-renowned schools. i think the only way to make the best, most informed choice is to visit both and see where you fit in

tennis89 - WashU endowment is bigger

wreavesjr - washu b-school does not have class on fridays. let me repeat NO CLASS ON FRIDAYS.

Clearly I am biased, I go to WashU and I love it.

Their respective endowments are pretty close and Goizueta doesn't have class on friday either.

Just curious, what does "overall academic atmosphere" mean?

Also, you can't triple major at Emory. Only double major or major and a minor (not sure about major and 2 minors, but I don't think you can).

Lastly, if you want to study English, Emory beats out WashU. Our Special Collections are top 10 in the US http://marbl.library.emory.edu/Finding/overview.html, and the English faculty is better.

Not too sure about Econ at WashU.

Honestly, though, you can't go wrong with either.

not sure if this matters...but...Emory will only allow you to choose two subjects...meaning either a major and a minor....or a double major....I am not sure if WashU is the same way or not.

My input. I would love to attend WashU. Instead, I got waitlisted from WashU, and will be attending Emory. After doing more research on Emory, I really like it. If WashU offer me a spot, I am not sure if I will attend WashU. Clearly, I am Emory class of 2012.

btw...I am imagining that you are a rising senior. Apply to both school, and see what happens. Maybe you will get reject from one, maybe not.
