WashU Waitlist -- Predictor?

Hey Guys,

I was just waitlisted at Washington University in St. Louis. :C What conclusions can I draw from this? Was I really close to an acceptance, but just not quite there?

My main question, can I pretty much forget about my HYPSM application? or, on the contrary, is this a good sign? A CCr once said:

"If you're confident with your stats, I'd take a waitlisting from Wash U as a good sign. It means they think you're gonna get in somewhere better, so they're not gonna accept you."

lol Is that true?

Any comments would be appreciated!

What does a WashU waitlist, or any waitlist really, actually mean? How can I predict the outcome of future applications?

Yes please do NOT discount your HYPS apps. WashU is very different. They track interest very closely, they are said to have “Tufts syndrome” (which, in a nutshell, is waitlisting overqualified candidates), and they are not need-blind. This means that there are many reasons why WashU may have waitlisted you but other schools may welcome you by large margins.

Looking at the stats of those accepted, it is very unpredictable and random. Don’t lose hope for your other schools!

I wouldn’t use Wash U’s decision as a basis for other schools. It is a school that protects its yield for ranking. It may be that the school thinks you’ll be accepted to a better school, and you won’t attend if accepted.

Yeah I got rejected lol. But looking at the WUSTL results thread, there were some people MUCH MUCH more qualified than I who got rejected, and some people with stats below mine who got accepted. I’m calling that out of all my reach schools, WUSTL is by far the most random.

Still, I hope this doesn’t foreshadow a domino effect lol

You cannot correlate decisions from one most selective school to another. Each is trying to meet their somewhat differing institutional needs in selecting their classes from differing pools (although with much overlap) of applicants. I don’t hold much stock in all that is said here on WUSTL practicing Tufts syndrome as my daughter was offered admissions there as well as at a few of “higher rated” schools and she will be graduating from Harvard in 2.5 months. Being waitlisted means you are competitive, but that you did not uniquely meet their institutional needs and they want to see what their acceptances look like before offering (or more likely denying) you. Denial is more likely because the wait list will be many multiples of the number of slots that they need to fill their class. Either way, good luck and if you cast your net widely I am sure you will be going to a good school.

Same here, I honestly didn’t think I’d get waitlisted. My stats are better than the 75th percentile and I most likely have better extracurriculars than most. I just hope that I’m “overqualified” rather than underqualified. And come to think of it, Wash U was my 2nd to bottom application behind Vanderbilt, where I got a full-tuition Chancellor’s Scholarship (15/900). This school is so random…
