I just got accepted to WashU Olin school of business yesterday and now I am curious about my chances to the other top schools on my list.
Duke, Penn, Dartmouth, Cornell, Brown, Georgetown, Notre Dame.

If you guys could please give me some indication of where I stand and what my chances are at these schools I would appreciate it.

Because of your lower GPA, all of these schools range from reaches to big reaches.

WashU is weird on their admissions. Congrats on getting in :)

But I agree, if anything holds you back, it'll be your GPA and it'll make your schools you've listed reaches. A good ranking would help/show how competitive that GPA really was.

well my school doesnt rank, but it is held in very high regard. 6 Kids got into Harvard EA and 4 to MIT EA, so it is definitely well respected and competitive. My GPA is low, and I agree that it is the one thing that will really hurt me, but I did send a letter to admissions explaining how low it was and why. Junior year my GPA went from 3.8 to 3.1 and I had very good reasons for that to happen. This year it went back up to 3.3. Hopefully my explanaition will help me. Of all of these reaches which are the most in range?

Thanks for the replies so far!

Congrats on getting in. WashU is a great school and Olin is one of the top business schools in the country.

Regarding the other schools...

Duke, Penn, Dartmouth, and Brown are unlikely. Considering the competition you face at those schools, even though your SAT M+V (1520) is in the ball park, your GPA is probably too low.

Cornell - Of the Ivies, Cornell is your best shot, but it's still a reach for the same reason as above.

Georgetown and Notre Dame - I think these are a toss up. Your SATs M+V are well above the median for both schools (in fact, I think they're above the 75th percentile), but your relatively low GPA is a drag on your chances. Let's call your chances 50/50.

I assume your reasons for GPA are too personal to share, and I can respect that.

But in that case, your chances will depend on the validity of your statement. Two things show promise for kids with wierd GPA's with explanations:

1) Upward trends
2) High SATs

This lets adcoms know you aren't BSing.

I know you have number 2, so that means your chances of acceptance vary roughly and directly to the validity of your explanation.

Yeah, I have number 2 but I also think I also showed an upward trend, of some sort. After a terrible junior year (by my standards and the standards of these schools). I did not, however, lower the difficulty of my classes, I took the same number of honors and AP's and am having the best year of my academic career, this senior year.

Does that constitute an upward trend even though junior year was my worst year?

I appreciate the fact that each and every one of these schools is a large reach, I accept that.

I am just curious, given that I was accepted to WashU, does that indicate that maybe they overlooked my GPA, and perhaps these other schools are willing to do the same. According to collegeboard, Duke, Georgetown, Brown and Cornell all have higher admissions rates than WashU (19%). I don't know if I should take that as an indication that maybe I have a good shot at all of these schools.

Thank you for the responses, I appreciate your input!!

Congratulations! Being from Mass may have helped you at Washu as they like to pull from all over the country. Your residence won't help you with the east coast schools.
Schools don't "overlook" a low GPA unless you have something else they are looking for. Since we don't know anything about you except your grades and test scores, I can only assume you must have had something else going for you ( interesting ECs, great essays) that appealed to Washu as well. So maybe whatever they liked, the others will as well. You can hope! Good luck.

Thanks A.S.A.P.

I think that I am average in all aspects, except for GPA. But I think that my essays put me apart from the rest of the crowd. My english teacher told me that my common app essay was the best essay he had ever read, for anything... so maybe that will be a huge help in admissions. I used this common app and .. molded it to fit each particular essay. I particularly enjoyed writing the Penn essay, and think that it came out very well.

Thank you all for the replies
