The Welcome Week Scheduling System opened today and the Wasserman Center had some amazing Welcome Week events that I was really interested in attending. (The Site Visits to Goldman Sachs, Good Morning America, etc.) I really just wanted to try to go on one of the employer site visits, but by the time I got on the online system, every single one was closed. It let me add myself to the waitlists for all of them, but then I read that the sign up lists weren't even official registration lists and that most of the events filled up on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Is that how these site visits work? Could I just show up early and hope that they let me go? Or do those events require pre-registration?

Call Wasserman tomorrow and ask. I don’t know off the top of my head and I don’t go to training until next week. Sorry. :-(

I have another question…is it okay to show up to some of the events a little late? There is a two hour dance class I want to take (from 6-8) but I have a required LSP event that doesnt end until 6:30. Would they let me in at 6:45? I have to go to the LSP event but the dance class is only offered once and I really want to go.

Kind of on the same question…can people leave events a little early, or is that considered to be really rude? I have another two classes that I would love to go to that are back t0 back (one ends at 12 while the other starts at 12, but they are both in the Kimmel Center, so I would probably not need to leave more than 5 min. early Im assuming…). Again, I dont want to seem rude, and I know its not good to rush from one event to another, but its just those two instances where I’m having that conflict.

OK, I’ll do that. Thanks for the reply :).

@Snapple

You can’t arrive late to events, but you can leave early. Most doors to events are shut after 15 minutes, so the people in the event are not disturbed. But they won’t care if you leave a few minutes early.

why are the goldman sachs/citi site visits during stern mandatory events -___-
seems counter-intuitive

Because. . .well, honestly? Sternies out of all NYUers will have more opportunities for visits like that. People in other NYU divisions don’t have the same perks/connections Stern students do. So for once, they’re opening up the tours to NON-Stern students.

i have an interview during the time when i have a mandatory orientation session.
Is it possible to just slip out of orientation and go for the interview?

What division of NYU are you in? I know someone from Stern said that they take attendance during the orientation events.

oh geez… im in stern… well i just emailed them so hopefully i can be excused.

Nooooob:
They do that on purpose, and did it the last 2 years as well, and every time Stern kids get their panties in a bunch over it. You see their office. Woo-hoo. They will NOT be handing out job offers, nor will you meet with anyone important, or will you be there to mix and mingle with employees. I know some people from my cohort freshman year pretended to be sick and went to the site visits and were really disappointed. Don’t worry, you aren’t missing out on anything, and Stern will provide you with other chances to visit HQ’s, NYSE, and the like. To tell you the truth, I think they do it on purpose-Stern gets touchy, since a lot of people email them about the double booking, but it seems as though Stern wants us to visit there as Stern students, not NYU…

madhatter: cough cough oh no, you are sick. Scr3w it. Tell them you were sick the next day. There really aren’t any consequences. They wont lower your grade, or take away any privileges. Think about it.

Another question: I know MAP said it wasnt possible to go late to events, does this include the “mix and mingle” event? It seems like it runs for a very long time and I cant imagine that many people would stay for the whole thing, so would they let someone in an hour or so after the event opens?

Got this in my inbox today… one for each of the waitlists I registered for (Goldman Sachs, MTV, Good Morning America, Citi.)

"Sarah:

Thank you for registering for the Career Reality 101: Employer Site Visit event below.

Goldman Sachs
Tuesday, August 31, 8:30am

You have been placed on the wait list. As the event approaches, we do expect some spots to open up. Please watch for updates and note the information below.

We will meet at the Wasserman Center for Career Development (the Palladium building, 133 East 13th Street, 2nd floor) and travel as a group. Please bring a photo ID and a MetroCard for the subway. Attire for this event should be at least business casual (pants/skirt, a nice shirt, tie).

NOTE: If you are unable to attend this program or no longer interested, it is REQUIRED that you cancel your registration through the Scheduling System by clicking “Cancel Add to Schedule.”

Wasserman’s Career Reality 101: Employer Site Visits are extremely popular and space fills up very quickly. Please do not take another students spot by failing to cancel your RSVP.

If you have any questions or would like to cancel via email, please do not hesitate to contact me (james.sillcox@nyu.edu).

Thank you,
James"

To me, that sounds like they are telling me to prepare to come, and there are no definite pre-registrees :)

^ Not to burst your bubble, but I got those emails too…Im thinking that they just want to be sure no one stays on the waitlist unless they are 100% sure they want to go.

Snapple: You can definitely leave some events early, and other events are more flexible with times. Obviously, the dances are kinda in and out, as well as casino night, etc. Others, like walking to Grimaldi’s is not as flexible with time. Consider the type of event, and make a valued judgement.

Also, certain events like the Acapella concert, standup comedy, and other night time activities that typically take place at Kimmel fill up very quickly and require you to get in line at least a half hour prior. Oh, the RHPS is a nightmare…

Oh I’m sure everyone who was on the waitlist got one of those emails. But anyways, I emailed the guy from Wasserman and asked if it was a whoever shows up early gets to go kind of thing.

@Snapple

Like wooden said, the “open ended” events allow for latecomers. But for things like panels and dance classes (which you were specifically asking about), latecomers are sometimes not let in, due to space constraints.

Okay, thank you guys for the responses :)
