Waste of time?

Hello, I'm a student needing all thoughts and replies I can get.
I want some feedback if trying to transfer is a waste of time and chance for me.
I'm a student at University of Wisconsin-Madison, currently taking a gap year due to military services. Always had some thoughts of transferring to others schools, and thought next fall 2011 would be a great time to have a fresh start. I finished my sophomore year, and would be transferring as a junior. I have no way getting my exact stats so they are a rough range.

College GPA: 3.0~3.3 ish
SAT: Reading 600 Math 770 Writing 670 (Essay 11) Taken at high school, 3,4 years ago
SAT II: Math IIC 800 Chem 730
Can't remember my HS gpa from the top of my head.but around the B area.
Pretty strong activities, and some strong Interships during the summer.

Some schools that I have in mind are U.Mich, BC, Emory, Tufts, G-Town(McDonough), NYU
I have no idea what so ever in terms of range, so some schools maybe way off. Could some one give me some feed back if I should give it a shot or shouldn't even bother applying. Thank you.

Your college GPA is a bit low. Schools like Emory, Tufts and GTown are all very selective. Typically, they expect a GPA around 3.5 or higher for transfer students. Of these three schools, Emory will be the easiest to get into (simply because they take the largest number of transfer students). That being said, it is still Emory and has a very academically strong student body, so of course it will still be difficult to get in. U Mich and NYU are good matches for you and you have a very good shot at getting into either or both. Note however NYU does not give good FA and is one of the most expensive schools in the country. U Mich also does not give good aid to transfer students either. Both schools would be expensive to attend. Emory on the other hand, will meet full need - just something to consider. So my advice to you would be to apply to Emory and if you can afford such schools, NYU and U Mich.

Thanks for the reply. I agree with you that my gpa is on the low side. I’d probably have to engage with the transfer process without high hopes. I’d be happy with any of the choices if I got into. I should focus more towards the schools you’ve pointed out. In terms of rec. letters do I have to get teachers or professors to write them? or is it fine to get a previous employers during internships to write them. It would be hard to get a hold of the professors in school. Thanks

Well, NYU and U Mich do not require any letters of recommendation. As such, you could include any other letters of recommendation. Whether or not they would be considered heavily, I’m not sure.

Emory and Tufts both require two letters of recommendation from either professors or TAs

Georgetown requires a letter of recommendation from a professor AND a college dean.

My advice to you would be to stick with applying to NYU and U of M, as you have a chance at getting into either of those and not need to have letters.

Thanks for the reply. I definitely should stick to your advice.
Thanks for taking the time to evaluate and answer my questions :)
