Gee, I'd think "We're Ivy League" would be enough. Guess not.

Can't wait for the competing lines of Princeton caps and Dartmouth hoodies.

re: neat stuff to wear
I agree. All colleges should have neat school spirit stuff for students to wear, or more importantly to send home to their overinvolved parents like me.
re: worrying about my college's image
This is where it ceases to be fun. A ranking of 13 on any of these artificial systems is pretty darn good. There was a nice New Yorker article by Malcolm Gladwell, a Canadian and the author of Blink, about how Americans over identify with their colleges. This is becoming particularly acute with the bulge in the number of applicants. A number of these, and the proportion seems to be increasing, are making their selection based on supposed prestige at a time when many colleges are filled with highly qualified students. Like the student mentioned in the article they will feel devalued if they can't go to a name university or college.

Let the college's standing drop in publications that rank universities, he said, and "my value as a human being feels like it's dropping."

I'm speechless. Well, no I'm not. What a moronic thing to think, let alone say in print.

Makes me want to get as far away from Cornell (or at least the Committee) as possible. I agree, to think that one's value as a human being is tied to the reputation of the college attended, is sad. That is one student that Cornell did not educate.

Ranked only 13th? What a tragedy! Never fear - it's nothing that some cool new caps and hoodies couldn't fix.

What nonsense - an absurd fix for a nonexistant problem.

I agree that it is extremely sad that kids feel that way when going to a well regarded university. But, I think that altho the NYTimes focused on Cornell, this thinking permeates other highly regarded schools which are not HYPS. Look at the recurring threads questioning the ranking of the ivies and trying to find the "least" of the "lesser ivies." I know I've read this type of thread time and time again.

And what about the kids who are devasted that they aren't going to HYP, but to Brown or Dartmouth, for example, instead? One's self worth shouldn't be so tied up in this, as we have all heard over and over how Harvard and Yale could fill their freshman classes three times over with students as equally qualified as those they do accept. But this doesn't seem to register. And this isn't a generalization, but I do know some parents who consider it failure on their part if their child does not go to Harvard. Yale and Princeton aren't good enough. What can their kids think about self-worth when raised in such a household?

That article is satire, isn't it? It's a big joke and you all are taking it seriously right? Well, serious or not, I got a big laugh out of it!!

The committee's roots lie in a Cornell-Yale football game in Ithaca four years ago. Yale fans in the stadium were wearing hats and other neat gear unlike anything Cornell offered for sale, Mr. Cohl said. He talked about that with students sitting nearby, including leaders of the campus Republicans and Democrats.

All were in agreement, he said. "Nobody was wearing our stuff," he said. "We didn't have cool hats, we didn't have cool hoodies."

** L O L !!!! **

or as we say, ROFLMAO!!!

I didn't see hats, cool or otherwise, but plenty of Cornell hoodies on this site (note the name):

I, too, thought the article was very funny.

that is pretty funny
I don't know alot about Ivies- but I do have a friend who chose Evergreen State college ( out of state) over Cornell University
( but then maybe if they had had mascot cooler than a geoduck she would have stayed on the east coast)

yuck. (10 char)
