My S is on swim team and water polo at his school and also he is on a club swim team and club water polo team. I sometimes feel sorry for him about all the hours that he spends practicing because he is always exhausted. I think his grade point is around 3.6 and I'm assuming that that is not good enough for either Brown or Princeton, however, if anyone wants to tell me otherwise, I'm all ears. Right now I am going to advise my son not to apply to Brown or Princeton as it would appear as though most of the kinds who are admitted have 4.0 averages.

Depends on how good he is. I had no idea there were so many strong schools with DI Mens Water Polo: Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount, Harvard, Stanford, USC, Pepperdine, George Washington, about half of the UCs including Santa Barbara…

In your shoes, if my child wanted to do this sport in college, I’d contact every single school on the list, if he’s got the athletic resume. I don’t know how your sport views a 3.6 For some sports, it’s low, others, not so much. You won’t know until you ask, and the coach can give you the most accurate answers.

Best wishes…

Sorry if this post comes too late to help you, but I have had waterpolo recruiting experience with both schools. For both of them, you need to keep in contact with the coaches. If the coaches are able to get the perspective student-athlete into the school, they will ask the athlete to put in an application towards the end of September. This is so these schools can review the student’s application and issue a Likely Letter by October 1st. Basically, if you are talking with either of the coaches of these schools and they DON’T mention applying for a Likely Letter, sorry but they don’t want you.

To answer the question about your S’s gpa:. A relatively low gpa can be made up for by his course rigor. I only had about a 3.8/4.0 but took basically all the hardest courses offered at my school, and all three coaches of the ivy league water polo schools said that they would have no problem getting me in.
