Waxing and Waning of College Popularity?

There's a thread in College Admissions here on CC where the kids are listing where they're applying. I found it interesting although some things are just as you would expect: HYPSM are very well represented as are NYU, UChicago, etc. But there are some LACs that I think were more popular last year than it seems this year (Carleton, with only 2, struck me) and then there's Wesleyan, with 17 currently applying. And CCers (at least the ones posting on this thread) are applying to Yale far more than Harvard.

I know this is completely unscientific, but it was interesting reading during my tea break (now, back to editing!).

Here's the link:

So what is the significance of the * and ** next to some schools??

See the thread "New York Times Article on Year 2007's Early Round Trends"

those stats are bogus. If you go onto any of the college tours websites on cc, there is a link to how many people from cc have applied to the school (that was reported).

^1) not everyone visits the college tours site, 2) that "I'm applying here" drop-down is completely optional and hard to see, 3) it says, "I will apply" not that I have applied.
