Way To Go Guidance Councelor!!!!

Hey everyone,
unfortunetly my guidance councelor seemed to have made a mistake.
I got home a letter from guidance saying my transcript was sent out to only 8 out of the 11 schools I requested.

2 of the schools (Duke,Columbia) have deadlines of Jan 1 and Jan 2 respectively.

The other School, Northeastern, has a deadline of Jan 15.

Now my question is, If I submit my apps online for both Duke and Columbia, and then ask my Guidance Councelor on Jan. 3 to submit my transcript etc, will I be penalized by these schools?

So basically what Im asking is Do all of my materials need to be in by the deadline or can I send my transcript after the deadline.

Thanks Alot guys.

sorry to tell u, but its all got to be in. i have heard of some rare cases where the schools let it fly, but not many at all. they expect you to meet the deadlines and i have heard they dont give much mercy about it. its always worth a shot to contact the school and give them your scenerio cuz i guarantee ur not the only one in that situation. best of luck.

call the schools/email them. make sure you are polite and don't bash your gc for making a mistake. just say that there was some kind of mix up and my transcript was not sent to all the schools i'm applying to.

Transcripts MIGHT be a problem -- likely not. I called all the top school because one of my teachers recs was going to be late, and they all said no worries. So for recommendations, it's fine

(Called HYPS, Duke, UPenn, among others)

It iwll be FINE...schools understand that sometimes things are out of your control and account for that

Just stay on top of it and it will be okay...the school can fax a copy and then mail one...

do you all honestly think they get everything filed and processed in 1 day? NO

The appliations themselves are a must by the deadline, but the items sent by others have some cushion

Its FINE for transcripts so long as its not a month late- a few days is no big deal

yea thats what I figured. Should I still call and just check with the admissions anyway?

^I guess you could, but I already did.. you'll just be confirming what they told me

PS: I really did call each school. They said it doesn't matter because in Feb they notify ppl about missing stuff, and if they're still allowed to get stuff in in Feb a few weeks will be nothing

Run: flee! from apayton's spurious comments. Citygirlsmom is correct. The deadline applies to you and what you need to provide (and there's leeway there a bit I'd assume too). Colleges KNOW that schools are out of session right now and items like recs, schools statements will trickle in. Once your file gets ready for review (which can be months from now), if anything is missing, they will contact you or your GC.

Believe it or not, there is not monstrous ogre in the college mail room scanning every item that's not postmarked by "Jan 1" and feeding them into the shredder or furnace.

Haha thanks alot guys.
I appreciate it.

lol, love the part about the "monstrous ogre"

Ugh, I'm so relived. I was about to post a similar panic thread lol

are you sure about that, cuz a relative of mine works with admissions and says otherwise. im not trying to start an argument or anything, but i want to make sure the OP is getting the correct information. i have been told that ALL admissions information must be turned in by the due date and not a day later. he told me that if the applicant contacted them with an unavoidable reason they would definitely consider it, but otherwise all uncompleted applications were trashed.

The application deadline dates are the dates for which the student must get their part of the application into the college. The deadline for GCs and recommendations are later in the process.

No, you won't be penalized because theoretically your transcripts are not due yet. Is the fall term over at your school? From your post it seems that you are from Long Island so the fall term is not over yet (since the NYS regents don't even begin until january 22, so for most schools in NYS the fall term -first half of your senior year is not over until ~ Jan 28/29th) so your transcript will not have your senior grades on it.

Most colleges that have many NYS students applying (especially Columbia & Duke) already know this. The due date for GCs to send transcripts, evaluations, recommendations, etc is somewhere in the neighborhood of february 15th (your GC can e-mail the schools to confirm). Even in the worse case, they will just send a letter letting you know that things are missing from your files (many schools will also grant your GC a professional courtesy of faxing the information over or sending it via e-mail then following up with an official copy via snal mail if the counselor should ask).

Now for rolling admissions schools, the sooner you send in all of your stuff, the sooner you get a decision (if they are on the fence about you, they will require your 7th semester transcript).

Should your GC send your transcript in now, they are only going to have to resend again once your senior grades come out.

so relax and breathe because it is ok.

i'm basically regurgitating here, but my guidance counselor told me that counselors and teachers have few more days after the deadline to send in everything, meaning that the schools are not strict with deadlines on their recs since they know that things are hard for them and things do go out of control. but the deadlines are for the students, and the apps MUST be in by the deadline.

I suppose it might be different for different schools, but in general, schools are more lenient with the HS and scores than they are with the students' applications, as almost everyone has said.

It wouldn't make any sense for them to "trash" applications that are not complete on the due date. Things get lost or misfiled - that's why most colleges have some way to inform you when your application is complete. Furthermore, it probably takes several weeks for them to process all the applications and supplemental stuff they receive - they probably wouldn't even notice if something came in a few days late.

hehe, I'm hoping that they don't notice for me. I decided to apply to a school at the last minute, and planned to give my counselor all the forms the last day before break. Alas, she just had to be "sick" that day. I left it on her desk, so hopefully she came to work the next day (in-service for us, work for her) and could've sent it out. Otherwise, it'll be late by at least 7 days. Oh well... I got everything else sent in time though, just need the counselor rec (sent transcripts in separately)

It's fine. It takes us weeks to compile applications after we receive them, because we have to get the mail, sort it, enter it into the system, file it, and THEN review the completed application.

It doesn't hurt to contact the colleges and let them know. Phone call is good, but send a followup email as well, saying things like - "I will contact my guidance office when it reopens on to get this problem solved. Thank you for your patience".

In other words, make an effort to keep the communication going.

Good luck, I'm sure it will be fine.

Generally, most college admissions offices extend a professional courtesy to high school teachers and guidance counselors. Their deadline is not until after the deadline for students. This may not be true for all offices, but most adopt a similar policy because they recognize the outside factors that may affect the mailing of some materials.
