I am currently an 8th grader who's taking Algebra 1. My school's honors program is pretty bad, and this is the highest you can do :( I really enjoy learning math though. I want to know ways I can learn math on my own as a hobby. I'm pretty good at math (at least compared to my peers). I'm taking Honors Geometry next year. I tried asking my school if I could take an online class to get Algebra 2 out of the way, but the high school I'm going to is very strict and won't let me. The math I want to learn on my own requires Algebra 2 knowledge though, but I want to start before I take Algebra 2 in 10th grade. I want to learn Calculus (1, 2, and 3), Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations before I go to college. I would like to take an online class, but I don't want to have to pay a lot of money. I'd rather just get some textbooks and self-study. Could you recommend me some textbooks to use, and what order I'd study them in?

I’m not really familiar with any textbooks that would be helpful for you. But I am a person who struggled with finding appropriate study habits for myself. It took me a while before I actually found a way to study that I actually enjoyed and that made it easier for me. I personally love using online learning resources as a way to study. Resources like flashcards, quizzes, mindmaps etc. They are all very helpful and easy to use. I personally use Exam Time for all my studying. I was introduced it through my other friends who were struggling studying as well and once they told me about it I was beyond excited. It has helped me so much with studying and getting the grades I have wanted so I highly recommend checking it out if you want a effective and easy way to study your math.

If you want to study more math and you do well with flashcards and other things of that sort, you can join Exam Time dot com. I have an account with them (for free) to study for my finals in college, and they have a ton of pre-made resources on various subjects. Also, if you want to keep up with your own studies or quiz yourself there, they have quizzes you can make and a study planner tool that makes it easy to keep up with a busy schedule of studying. Good luck and enjoy! ^.^

I’m surprised no one’s mentioned this, but does your school (or future high school) have a math team? Ours learns math that is far more advanced than their classes (and these are juniors in BC Calc).

Will your school allow you to take algebra2 along with geometry next year? If you have room in your schedule for it, that may be the simplest solution if you’re excited about learning more math. Those subjects are different enough that it should be possible to take both at the same time.

@mathyone I tried that with my school like a month ago xD But on Monday I got a call from the assistant principal to have a meeting with him about it on Tuesday. Today, I scheduled the test to get into Honors Algebra 2, and I will be taking it tomorrow right after school. The test is supposed to be EXTREMELY rigorous though, so I highly doubt I’ll pass. But if I do pass, I’ll be the only person taking Honors Geometry and Honors Algebra 2 at the same time! There will only be 1 other freshman in Honors Algebra 2.
