I have a roommate who smells kind of bad. Do you know any ways where I can mask the smell? he takes a shower everyday, but his odor just spreads throughout the room? I've tried febreeze, but I don't want to spray it on him or around him too much

Try one of those new motion sensor Glade room deodorizers. That way it will even be spraying when just your roommate is alone in the room.

Maybe it’s his dirty laundry that’s stinking up the room. Even though he showers, he might be putting on dirty clothes.

Yuk. When he’s not around, spray his hamper and closet with Lysol.

Could you turn the heat down without it feeling too cold? Or at least at night? I have a tendency to sweat at night if it’s not cool enough (even if I don’t feel too warm when I go to bed), and he could be similar.

Also, do you know what the smell is coming from, like sweat throughout the day or dirty laundry that builds up?

i think the smell is coming from him. he’s a big fella, so he sweats, and anytime I bring people over, they choose to stay outside after being in my room for a while. I don’t notice it when I’m sleeping, but when I get close to him like within 5-7ft, the aroma is there. I’ve left the window open, and the smell is still there. I don’t want to spray lysol if its dangerous? is that dangerous?

are the motion sensor ones, the plug in ones? is that safe to leave in for the whole day? it’s not a fire hazard right?

thanks for the suggestions

^^^^

Not plug-in, battery powered.

I don’t want to gross you out but you probably smell like him, second hand B.O.(body odor.) Sorry dude.

second hand BO? are you serious? his desk is right next to my closet

i was thinking about putting crushed leaves in my room, is it rosemary and sage that smell good, to kill the smell? does anyone know if this is a good idea?

Skip the leaves and try the motion activated Glade thing. It’s battery operated.

Do you think he even realizes that he has body odor? I wonder if there’s any way to kindly discuss this subject with him. If presented in an understanding way, he may even thank you for cluing him in on the matter.

Maybe you can approach a discussion from the “its not you, its me” angle. Something along the lines of " haha, I think our body odors clash creating some kind of toxic waste dump. We should both do more to change that".

Hang dryer sheets like Bounce in your closet to counterattack your roomie’s smell invading your clean clothes. Maybe zippered clothing bags? I bet your backpack reeks of him. Maybe a big potted plant to deodorize the air? as a process of elimination he needs to rewash his bed sheets and pillow as well as his clothes. I have to hand it to you, you’re pretty understanding about all this… your situation would be my worst nightmare-ewww.

Maybe go down to the housing office and demand a new room. Tell them your room is too small and it’s suffocating you both. :)

Just kidding. Try the dryer sheets. Or try keeping the room cold-ish.

My room always smells like stale prostitute because my roommate bathes in perfume, I have one of those glade things that lets out a puff of air freshener every so often. It’s like apple cinnamon and I love it.

I would write the link to this thread on a piece of paper and put it in an envelope with your roommates name on it and either leave it on his desk, slip it under the door when he is inside and you leave, or put it in his mailbox if he has one. lol.

You could try one of those reed diffuser things. I have one, and the aroma is pretty strong. And I just have a little one; I’m pretty sure you can buy them in bigger sizes, too.

thanks for the suggestions guys. the dryer sheets work. too bad i can’t stick them everywhere. i’ll try out the glade spry and reed diffuser also to see how they work.

I know a few tips…

adding a shot of Pine Sol or the Hospital Grade Lysol to the rinse cycle of your laundry works well

powdered carpet deodorizers kill smells really well and you only need a bit

febreeze

wiping down the furniture with those Lysol all surface wipes

open the windows, run a fan on low, and burn some incense. you guys can agree to do that while you are both in class. just have it be, like, the last one to leave, cracks the windows and turns a fan on low.

there are also these neat things called “filter fresh” and you are to put them in your HVAC unit over the air filter. but, since you live in a dorm you could put one on an oscillating fan or hang one from the air vent(s)

^ these work well also

^ this is what the filter fresh is

I’ve found Febreeze works really well at getting rid of odors. Spray it on surfaces like the carpet (if you have a carpeted room), the window blinds, bed covers, trash can, laundry basket, etc.

wallflowers from bath and body works. they work wonders
