I would like to get a masters degree in computer science and hopefully attend a selective college. However, in order to do so, I obviously have to get accepted, but that’s not very easy. I am aware that TONS of students apply to these highly selective universities and most of them are highly well qualified. I want to distinguish myself from the rest and I know I need great grades, test scores, class rigors, etc. What can I do outside of school that’ll help??
Basically, take what you’re passionate about and pursue it to the highest degree available to you. That might mean competing, starting a club, creating something new, interning, etc. If there’s more than one thing you can pursue–especially if it’s completely different from your academic / career interests, or if it’s completely random like magic tricks–that will help. Through your essays, you want to show that you’ve given deep thought to what kind of person you are, the experiences you’ve had, and how they’ve shaped you.
