We all know college beds suck, but how do we make them better?

I did the whole egg crate + jersey sheets + pillow + microbead pillow last year. It was ok. This year I'm debating about spending the $40+ and going for a fiber or feather bed.
I was wondering if anyone suggests getting one rather than doing the standard egg crate. I've also heard that a mattress pad over an egg crate does well also. What's the difference in between fiber and feather beds? (as in comfort/warmth/feel, not in materials since I know fiberbeds are made of well, fibers essentially, and feather of feathers). Any suggestions?

memory foam

just get real drunk, then the floor's comfortable.

636

Sheepskin is my fave.

get like 100 pillows and lie in em

The foam pieces sold at like a walmart or target make the beds feel amazing.

I brought my own mattress into res (queen size). It's very firm so my back doesn't sink in like it does on crappy spring mattresses. However, it's very bulky and not very easy to move around. Because I need to move every four months between school and wherever I'll be working (my school works on a special co-op system), I'm buying a twin size mattress that folds (~$200 CAD) and a memory foam (~$100 CAD) that is slightly elevated at the spot where the back lies. My sister has this combination and it feels wonderful.

I know this may seem a little expensive at first, but if you're going to be using this for many years, I don't see why you shouldn't spend a little extra for countless nights of comfortable sleep.

I used memory foam topped with an egg crate from target...one of the cheap $12 ones...and then a mattress pad...nothing special either...on top of them both. Regular sheets, a comfy blanket, and a comfy pillow and I was in heaven. More comfortable than my bed at home!

Memory foam is awesome. It's expensive for high quality, but worth the investment. Target has three memory foam options, and the highest quality is an extremely significant step up. I know college shopping is all about saving money, but for me this was one of my only splurges.

I doubt I'll go for memory foam, just because its so expensive. A friend suggested doing the whole egg crate under fiberbed because it's just as good as a featherbed, if not better, for cheaper. And, lots of big pillows ofcourse.

I went with memory foam, here's the kind that I have (and it's not really expensive) http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=107810&RN=667&BTSMode=true

It's really worth it in my opinion. On a side note though, I always fall asleep a lot faster when I'm at school than when I'm at home. I guess it reminds me of when I was little and had bunk-beds, haha.

Date someone who has a real bed

Any ideas for makinkg the beds wider? Its kind of hard to comfortably fit two people on a bed that's only 2.5 to 3 feet across...

The real thing you need, and here is the secret no one has told you-- plywood.

A piece of plywood cut to teh size of your bed underneath your mattress will give your back the much needed support not provided by a thin spring mattress falling in all over the place.

beds are always more comfortable when you sleep in them with someone else :-D

The two college beds I've had haven't been that bad, but I was in a recently remodeled dorm and now in an apartment complex that was renovated last summer, so new furniture was in the rooms.

But I agree about the plywood...this makes a world of difference under the mattress! I use that at home also, my bed here at school is built on a solid base so no plywood is necessary. I use Egg Crate Foam with a thin fitted mattress pad over that and haven't had an uncomfortable night yet! And I sleep on my stomach, which is arguably the worst position for your back, and don't have any of the back pain that I had before getting the Egg Crate Foam and mattress pad.

Feather bed!

Ephrhymeswbeef, think about it. The small bed is an ADVANTAGE then. :)

Egg crate + featherbed + mattress pad + sheets. Or - featherbed + memory foam + mattress pad + sheets.

The featherbed/fiberbed is essential (at least for me it was), but next year I'll be taking a page out of some of my friend's books and adding a mattress pad (which keeps the feathers from poking through the sheets and keeps the featherbed in place). The egg crate underneath helps keep the feathers from shifting to the foot of the bed and adds a little more stability. If you really want to go all out, a friend of mine replaced the egg crate with memory foam, and it was the most comfortable bed ever.

chuy... How so? I don't consider getting pushed off of my three foot perch at 4 in the morning an advantage...
