Thanks

Luliztee: Did you ever visit? My daughter is just starting her college search and was interested in looking at Salve Regina. Just curious about your impressions. Thanks

We visited in November 2005. My d loved it and she applied and was accepted. But she is considering several other schools as well and is not ready to commit.

they gave her a 10,000 scolarship for merit award and invited her to apply to the Pell Honors Program, which sounds really interesting.

My first impressions of the school were WOW! It is beautiful, most buildings are mansions and the admissions center is nothing short of spectacular, at least in beauty. It is set at the foot of the Cliff Walk which is a winding path several miles around the edge of Newport. we are told the kids can choose to live in one of the mansions in the sophmore year.

Academically, the school seemed average.....not real tough to get in( 1100 avg SAT score I believe) but of good quality education.

It is a catholic school and Mass is said each morning in the chapel but noone is required to attend. It is optional.........theology I believe is incorporated into the curriculum but many chioces of classes in all the world's religions are offered to fulfill the required credits. I did not get the impression that anyone who is not catholic would feel uncomfortable at all.

The town of Newport is very quaint shops and restaurants, very touristy in warm months, cruiseships dock off shore and ferry passengers in for the Mansion Tours( Bellevue Ave and downtown villiage shopping and lunch.)

Salve uses the town trolley free to students that makes its way all over town and there is a stop in several spots over the campus. They also are entitled to all Rhode Island public transportation for free. The kids told us many like to go up to Providence where Brown and other colleges all are for night life. They use the public buses for free w/ ID cards, I think the water ferries are free too.

The students tell us that during school year the town is student run, many students find pt work there. When we went we stopped at the visitor center and all the kids working there were Salve Students so they gave us an earful. Everyone we met there seemed to really like the school and I sensed a strong community school spirit from them all. They were all happy to talk about it ( more like brag about it...which I thought was a good sign)

If your D likes history or art history, architecture then this place is perfect!

Salve offers an Historical Preservation Major that sounds fascinating combining archeology and history using many of Newports resources as well as NYC and other places.

They seem to really have a strong interest in Politics and Govt as well as international affairs. The Pell Honors House hosts speakers from all over the world to come once a week. They have terrific internships and study abroad programs and they encourage everyone to participate.

As far as campus life : there were a few eateries and a cafeteria a couple of hang out lounges that seemed cool w/ pool tAbles and kinds of tvs and things to do. Two movie theatres. Can't remember what else .........sports? Did not pay too much attention to this part of the tour since my D does not play sports. Dorms? All kinds......very unique in addition to the standard dorms as well.

Overall my impression is this............

aesthetically speaking the place is like a fairy tale land, and if your d always wanted to live in a castle this is her chance. Academically I thought it was just ok.

If you took away the gardens, the sea and the opulent mansions and just set the school down in an ordinary setting in traditional brick buildings the school may remind you of a very good high school. But I don't want to underestimate things...........these were only my impressions from the tour.

Myself, I liked the school and would be happy if my D chooses to attend.

Thanks. One question about the scholarship (it was not clear on the website) - is that a total for four years or per year. Your summary seems like what my impressions were, so it would be a great safety. It also seemed to have limited majors, so that is another concern. I greatly appreciate your thorough response.

10K per year

Thanks so much. My daughter really loved Newport, but we did not have the chance to tour so looks like it is worth going down to tour. - good luck to your daughter with her decisions. Let us know what she decides.

We are actually going up to Newport tomorrow to see Salve. The offices are not open, but we have a family friend who is a student there and she is giving us a "custom" tour. DD decided to apply there...sort of at the last minute....her "stuff" has been sent from her school, and her SATs. She is actually completing the application online tonight. We have heard very good things about Salve, and the personal attention the students get there.

How was the visit?

We were at Salve today. The school and all offices were closed, but we have a family friend who is a student there. She gave us a very nice personalized tour. The campus is compact, and nicely placed amongst the mansions in Newport. The views to the ocean are quite pretty and the grounds well cared for. We were able to see the Miley building which is a freshman dorm, and also houses the dining hall, bookstore, and student health services. It was all nice...nothing special, but fine (and better than DS's dorms where he goes to school). The classroom buildings were all locked up, as was the library. I understood that the school was closed for the holiday but truthfully wondered why the library was not open. Interestingly...the recreation building was open. It has a nice fitness center. Salve students can also go to the Newport Y which also has nice facilities, we were told...and a pool. We were able to go in and see a sophomore dorm also. These are mostly in older LARGE houses. One is Carey Mansion and it IS a mansion converted into student housing. I will say that I thought it needed a bit of "work" but it is not owned by Salve...they lease it. The rooms, however, were enormous. We saw a quad that was huge...really huge. Our overall impression of the school was good. The facilities are very nice, but not state of the art (except for the library which is brand new). The campus was smaller than we expected, but actually that was nice...easy to get to everything. The students can ride the Newport Trolley at no cost which is nice. I will say that the town is a terrific place. There is plentiful shopping!! We ate lunch at a place called Red Parrot, and it was really good (pricey, but good). I'm not sure the school has the breadth of choices my daughter is looking for as an undecided freshman, but it is an option worth considering nonetheless. I imagine that this school is absolutely gorgeous when the flowers are blooming and the grass is green. We were told that there are lots of "Salve specials" offered by Newport businesses to the students. Also, as reported above, the students can ride RI public transport for free and often go to Providence for day trips. DD said it is a school worth thinking about, although it does not totally fulfill her requirements (warm weather...strong sciences...orchestra). Her application has been sent so we'll wait and see.

The apps were completed.. did anyone accept? I am "helping" my DS start his college search & his HS College Counselor mentioned Salve to check out. My DD really loved CC as a tool for her search 2 years ago -but I am wondering why there do not seem to be many postings for Salve here? Is it the size of the school? I am very curious to see if any of you that have posted above accepted your admissions offer and how you like Salve?
