So I already know first year students can not have cars on campus, but I thought I read somewhere on UVA's site that first year students can't operate vehicles in Albemarle county? Is this true? If so...why?

I've never heard that. Post a link if you find it.

I know that I read it somewhere. Perhaps in the literature from orientation. I will see if we still have it.

I found it through the myuva site. It said under 7.2 "What Should I Not Bring" that 1st years can't operate a car in the county? I was confused by that. The campus, understandable, but the county?

Why don't you call the housing office and ask for clarification?

I would assume that it means they don't want first years to bring cars here, even if they try to scoot around the lack of parking by garaging their car off grounds.

Your first year is about getting involved in the community, not motering home every chance you get.

Oh I won't motor home...but I was really confused by that statement. I thought it meant I couldn't operate a vehicle at all in the county. I guess the wording threw me off.

I know an alumna who brought her car here and had it off-grounds. They probably are trying to cover all the bases with their wording.

We're all about questioning here. Give a call to that office! Maybe you'll inspire them to change the wording!

Dean J, I just called. They said they are strict about the car policy. So essentially 1st years can't bring a car to/near the campus. So yeah, they were just trying to cover all the bases.

Unless you are in the crew team or some other sports team, there's no way you can have your car on grounds.

^^ Thats not true ^^ - If you have a legitimate need for a car (ie - job far from grounds, volunteer firefighter, etc.) they'll allow you to have it for your first year. Its evaluated on a case-by-case basis though...

(1) Chances are, you won't need a car at all in your four years. I'm probably bringing one down next year but it's because my parents don't want to sell it but at the same time they don't want it in the driveway. So I guess I'm taking it to school with me.

(2) Some people get around the car rule, even though it's technically illegal. A girl I know had a boyfriend in a fraternity who let her leave her car at the frat house. Another guy I know had a brother with a car that he used from time to time.

Cav is right on with this comment.

I'm not even a student and I only drive my car about once a week to do stuff you probably won't be doing (going to the recycling center, post office, supermarket, dry cleaner, etc.).

Between the bus system (UTS=UVA, CTS=Cville), the free trolly and your feet, you'll be fine.

Additionally, if you do have a good reason to need one, you can get an official exception to the prohibition from the dean of students. If you're interested in this, talk to someone in dean of students residence life office (in one of the alderman road buildings next to the physics building).
