We need some spirit and a sense of community

^ I know the question was for Shirobot but totally story and message is better lol. Isnt that what made V for Vendetta totally cool :) ?

But imo there can be good movies with: story + message (v 4 vendetta)
no story + message ( Crash)
story + no message (the rock and all the michael bay's ^^)

Btw how do you guys view Michael Bay? I know a lot of people hate his style and his films but I really love his movies. Esthetically they are great and ....really fun! The Rock will always be one of my fav. films

Shirobot, I am exactly the same way, buying DVDs of shows that I had never even watched before. It's my vice. But you definitely would love VM. I've introduced seven people to my DVDs, and each one has become obsessed with it (they all ended up having marathons of episodes because it gets so addictive, and one went from 11 at night to 11 the next morning--straight--because he wanted to know what happened. They now call me their dealer. :) ). Anyway, I would definitely recommend it!

And, afollick, as far as it being on UPN, I know. Whenever people say, "I've never heard of the show before. What station is it on?" and I say "UPN." They look at me (a white girl) and laugh. I try to tell them that it is completely different than anything else there (it's witty, suspenseful, snarky, emotional, deep, etc). So ignore the UPN part- besides, if it gets renewed it'll be on the CW!

^uschicka: I have had the same experience with the OC. Even though it's basically a soap opera I love it lol. Anyway I had seen the first few episodes while in the states and then started downloading them when I went back to France. I started talking about the show to my friends and everybody made fun of me but then I started showing the first episodes to people and everybody just became hooked. Since then we often have OC marathons at my place, and the show has become a cult classic (no kidding) in my school and everybody dl's it even though it is not aired in France.

Btw, I'll see what Veronica Mars is all about ^^

ooh..a veronica mars fan? YES! :0) that show is awesome. logan=:)
it's like the next buffy (any buffy fans or on this board?)

Exactly Sean.....but my pick for Story + no message would be Airplane!

^ ahah well in that case we could put a lot of movies down lol

None of you have Full Metal Jacket

ahem Check out Number 1 on my post^

BEFORE I SAY ANYTHING I WANT TO EMPHASIZE SOMETHING: I AM NOT RACIST IN ANY WAY!

Have any of you seen Inside Man? I liked it, but I'm seriously pretty ****ed at Spike Lee. I know he is supposed to be an activist and all but it just becomes ridiculous after a while...

Even though I liked the movie coming out of the theater, there are some aspects of the film which really bother me now. Ok the scene with the Sikh guy being called an "Arab" was ok we get the point and it is true I am sure that there is some discrimination and racism within the police. But when you think about it.... who are the only 100% good guys in the story? Denzel Washington (who I really like btw) and his partner right? Ok he's black so what that's totally normal. I have no problem with that although it seems weird that these two partners would both be African Americans (only 10% of the population).

You probably wondering: " hey Clive Owen is a good guy"...
well not really. We do empathize with the character but he is a robber...even though he steals diamonds which belong to a criminal. He is also arrogant and proud.

After this here comes what I really have to say: Can you think of one single white man/woman or non minority that is good in the story?

Jodie Foster: evil manipulative ***** who doesnt care if she helps "bad people" she's just in it for the money
The Captain: Calls the guy an "Arab" even though it is pretty obvious that the guy is rather Indian. Appears Ignorant blablabla etc....
Willem Dafoe: acts like an ******* when he first meets Denzel Washington
The everyday cop: RACIST even in front of Denzel Washington
Christopher Plummer: War Criminal!!!
The Mayor: Spineless sack of **** blablabla
Clive Owen's team: Well they ARE thiefs it doesnt matter how you put it they do rob a bank. You have the little punks, the stereotyped money loving jew, and stereotyped New York female ***** with big breasts.

Did anybody have this reaction or somewhat agree with what I am trying to say? Eventhough Spike Lee here seems to direct a mainstream hollywood thriller, he still manages to basically "take a dump" on white people...
Please tell me if I am overreacting or getting carried away...

Name: Andrea

Location: Northern California southern Bay Area; my school is next to Paly

Major: Psych, considering double-majoring/minoring in communications.

TV: I am the biggest spy show geek I know. Seriously, if it's British, from the 60's and features secret agents I've probably. My favorites from that period are the Avengers, Danger Man, the Persuaders, the Saint and the Prisoner. The Man from UNCLE is the American exception-I'm just starting to get hooked on it. For modern TV shows, I like: Alias, the Simpsons, Murder Rooms, Monk, Hustle (BBC and AMC's show) and Whose Line Is It Anyway.

Books: Catch-22, the Lion in Winter, the Great Gatsby, Tender is the Night, This Side of Paradise, Sophie's World, Lolita, the Short Stories of Vladimir Nabokov, the Joy Luck Club, The Harlequin Tea Set and Other Short Stories, Death on the Nile, Five Little Pigs, And Then There Were None, Jane Eyre, Absent in the Spring, the Namesake, Huis Clos, Anna in the Tropics, the Eye, Pale Fire, Saints and Avengers: British Adventure Series of the 1960's

Music: I'm a huge film score fan; my favorite composers are: John Barry, Michael Giacchino, Bernard Herrmann, Henry Mancini Joe Hisaishi, Philip Glass, Yann Tiersen, Michel Legrand, Edwin Astley, Albert Elms, Burt Bacharach and David Holmes. For classical music, I like Mozart, Bizet, Borodin and Tchaikovsky in particular. All other kinds of music, I like Simon and Garfunkel Peter Cincotti.

Movies: Dr. Strangelove, the Manchurian Candidate (both versions), One Two Three, Goodbye, Lenin!, Au Revoir Les Enfants, the Lion in Winter, the Philadelphia Story, Charade, Sabrina, Roman Holiday, How to Steal a Million, Arabesque, the Thomas Crown Affair (original), the Sound of Music, Spellbound, Rebecca, Rear Window, North by Northwest, Vertigo, the Third Man, To Kill A Mockingbird, Out of Africa, the Ipcress File, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Vol. 2, the Hours, Crash, Snatch, Chicago, the Incredibles, the Pink Panther series, Clue, Murder by Death, the first and last Indiana Jones movies, Catch Me if You Can, the Aviator, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Casino Royale (the 1960's 007 spoof, though I can't wait for the new one) and most James Bond movies except for the Pierce Brosnan ones

mad-toast, it looks like we have a lot of the same interests-James Bond, Hayo Miyazaki movies, Hitchhiker's Guide, and a bunch more :)

^Yeah retro, the only major difference is that you like the Pacific and I like the Atlantic (however, I must say that I'm not looking forward to the "new guy" playing 007 in Casino Royale.)

Oh yeah, if you like film scoring so much, then what about John Williams!!? (Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, First Encounters of the Third Kind- he's timeless!) I do second Henry Mancini though- yeah Pink Panther.

^ Daniel Craig really seems like a bad choice. I hope he'll prove me wrong though

^Blonde hair, blue eyes? What are they thinking!?

he also doesnt have any "charm" really. I liked him in Layer Cake but couldn't stand him in Munich so really I don't know what to expect from him.

I like Williams's earlier works plenty, the 70's through the 90's (Jaws, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, practically everything he's done with Steven Spielburg), but there's something about his more modern scores that don't have the same creative spark. I did really like Memoirs of a Geisha (this should have won the 2006 Oscar!) and Catch Me If You Can, but he's copied so much by other composers nowadays that you almost get tired of listening to derivatives of his work. Just hear the Terminal and you'll know what I mean. While I consider him to be the most influential film composer from the 70's onwards, he's never been my favorite for some reason. I really like the orchestral jazz sound of the 60's that's more of a trademark of John Barry (think the Connery Bond films) and Henry Mancini. Giacchino's score for the Incredibles, which was originally slated for Barry to score, is a nice homage. And sadly enough, I'm really looking forward to M:I III just for Giacchino's music...

I think people are being too harsh on Daniel Craig; I'd rather wait to see the trailer or some sort of promotional clip of Casino Royale before judging his performance. People seem to be reacting to Craig the way audiences did in the late 60's and early 70's when Connery left the series...twice (I'm not counting the unofficial Thunderball remake Never Say Never Again). We're all so used to seeing Brosnan in the role that it's hard to picture a successor whose appearance and acting style are so different. I do hope that Casino Royale will be more faithful to Fleming's novel and actually focus on character development and a down-to-earth plotline, like For Your Eyes Only following the entertaining but over the top Moonraker, but perhaps that's just wishful thinking.

I guess you're right. We should just wait and see before we judge it outright- very profound thinking retro!

Name: Abraham (a.k.a Abracadabra… haha, just kidding… although I do like that nickname now that I think of it)
Location: Oakland, Alameda, Castro Valley, Cypress, Cerritos, California (I have to represent!)
AIM: honestabe509
Major: History (I might want to change it, but who knows)
TV: Mainly sports, occasionally The Simpsons. I haven’t actually watched TV at my house in two months. Wow. Don’t worry, I have a life!
Books: Freakonomics is interesting. Yes, that’s the title of an actual book.
Music: I’ll listen to almost anything… just as long as screaming does not consume more than 75% of the song.
Food: Italian food is pretty good. I grew up with Korean food, so that’s swell as well. I’m good with eating almost anything.
Interests: Although I’m not the best at sports, I love to play and watch different types of sports. Heck, even curling seems interesting. I’ll play anything from archery to zucchiniball (which I don’t think exists).
Movies: I don’t go out to the movies much, but Schindler’s List was pretty good, Ocean’s Eleven was interesting, and Batman Begins wasn’t too bad either. V for Vendetta was interesting as well.
Teams: The USC football team! New quarterback John David Booty will kick some Pac-10 booty this year. Professionally, I like a lot of sports teams. For baseball, I like the Oakland A’s and the San Francisco Giants. For basketball, the Golden State Warriors (yes, they’re the lovable losers but they will start to win soon!). For hockey, the San Jose Sharks. For soccer (or football in other parts of the world), I like Manchester United. For cricket… I don’t follow cricket. For auto racing… I don’t follow that either. And yeah… I can’t think of some teams right now.
