hey....

I will be applying next year...

but, if we all have great stats, we can make uf move up the us news ranks.

anyone know the current rank? in 2005, it was 50. i am not sure about the 2006 rank.

decisions go out today.... so good luck.

If you are talking about "Selectivity rank", UF already is ahead of schools like GaTech, UT-Austin, UIUC, and Wisconsin - all pretty highly regarded State schools.

I don't think student quality is really UF's main issue...when 79% of the students at in the top 10% of their high school class, and the rest have some other "exceptional talent"...ie, sports, music.....that is a very solid student body.

When prevents UF from breaking into the absolute elite of the Publics (and some would argue it is already there)...is money. Specifically, faculty pay and student-teacher ratios. Frankly...the tuition is too low. The state legislature tries to keep the school affordable, which is a noble cause, but it does compromise the ability of the school to become an absolute top public overall.

That stinks... I am choosing to attend UF just to better my state... I could probably go to UVA or something, but UF is free.

UF is as good as UVa in many areas and better in some (like engineering). There is no reason to feel any inferiority by attending UF. UF has way more NM Finalists than UVa can even dream of. UF is a well-regarded school, and will get you into any graduate or professional program in the country if you do well....what more could you really ask?

rogracer, I'm a junior, but have been debating many colleges... Over the past month, I've come to the conclusion that UF is a lot better (price wise... FREE!) for me in regards to many aspects... one being applying out of state is a long shot, and I plan to apply to grad school, so I can save my $200K for when the time comes.

so basically, i'm set on UF... plus I am legacy there. :D

ps: i wonder why my location says Houstan. o.O

Here is some interesting data from UF's "common data set" that I happened to find.

http://www.ir.ufl.edu/data.htm

Of note, is UF's upward trend in student quality over the last few years. For example, looking at the number of students who graduated in the top 10% of their high-school class, we find:

Year / % in top-10
2001 / 66
2002 / 75
2003 / 79
2004 / 81

That's pretty impressive....especially for such a large school as UF.

nice... i'm definitely applying to UF for ED because it's free and florida is a pretty nice state... although I could probably get into a better school (on paper, that is)... I might as well just do it. i'd like to have $60K saved rather than $60K spent.

UF is about 3 hours from my house, so it's not bad at all to visit.

i might be in the same situation as your son. from what i've read in medicine magazines, UF has a premier premed community for many students. it also is recognized by a lot of doctors and med schools as an excellent premed undergrad institution.
