We returned from orientation!

Good news for all! We returned from orientation. We discovered that the professors we met at ASU respect the students for their choice to attend ASU and want to help them achieve their goals! Not one of them seemed to look down on our son for choosing ASU. We were concerned before orientation but are not concerned now! We learned that the school has made a commitment to make classes available to students who need the classes to graduate in 4 years. In other words, the concerns of the UC system that it may take years of extra schooling to satisfy graduation requirements don’t exist at ASU. If your child wants to graduate in 4 years he/she will.

With math testing, our son satisfied his freshman math requirements for both the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Carey school of business. He also satisfied his foreign language requirement.

Our only criticism about Orientation is that there wasn’t much time for our son to meet other future students. Orientation at ASU is about the business of enrolling your child in ASU. On the east coast and in the Midwest, Orientation is an overnight adventure. After the business is finished, the future students engage in activities ranging from a scavenger hunt across campus to learn where things are to a chat session with your small group to dining in a dining hall. While it is true that they may do this during Welcome Week at ASU, these informal evening activities have a way of alleviating some of the anxiety of going away to college. I do wish there had been more of those types of activities. Anyway, we are excited to join the Sun Devil family and look forward to our son receiving a high quality education!

Glad things went well and best of luck to your son! My D is a very serious student who will be a sophomore in the fall. She is loving her time at ASU and just being in the Phoenix area.

Thanks STEMFamily. I believe my son will have a wonderful experience as well. He is an excellent student and is looking for a fully balanced college experience. He wants the PAC 12 sports, varied educational opportunities, an interesting social scene and a diverse college population. We were thrilled to see that 27 percent of the students are from out of state and 9 percent are international. That means the university will still have things to do and people to spend time with during long weekends when those from Arizona may go home. A small liberal arts school nearer to home (in the Northeast or MidAtlantic region) would have been deadly for him both academically and socially. His sister is thriving at The Ohio State University and I believe he will thrive at ASU! Thanks for letting me know of your daughter’s positive experiences. Go Devils!

He might be better off just getting a job at Starbucks! I hear they give away a free ASU degree, why would anyone pay for one?

@Englishman. Are you working at Starbucks now? That ASU job didn’t work out for you?

I love my Starbucks on Mill Ave :-h

@Beaudreau So now financially a HS senior would be financially better off getting a job at Starbucks, living at home and getting a free ASU degree then what…become a realtor?. I’m sure you are pleased your DS is not going to ASU, barrett or no barrett

Englishman: your comments are sarcastic, irrelevant and useless. Please find a new past time.

Englishman, if your EFC is so low that it’s cheaper for you to send your S to Amherst than in-state ASU with the scholarships your S would likely qualify for there, then I advise that you should not be spending any of your money at Starbucks. It’s an unwise allocation of limited funds. But perhaps if you took a 2nd job at Starbucks then you could enjoy Starbucks drinks for free, or at least at reduced cost? That’s the way to go, surely. Hey, and you could pick up another degree at ASU for free as a side benefit and I promise not to impugn or denigrate your college/method of getting a degree for low cost. Just as I would not do so for your method of obtaining a degree for your S at low cost.
