Weak ECs

Hi everyone,

I'm a rising senior and many of my top schools are highly selective LACs. My scores and grades are good enough for these schools, yet my extra-curriculars are lacking. A basic run-down of my ECs (including senior year plans) is:

4 years of swim team (will be captain this year)
2 years (freshman and sophomore) of intense year round club team that took up basically all of my time, which accounts for a lack of other ECs those years
Special Olympics swimming coaching (junior year and senior year)
Cross country and spring track (junior and senior years)
A leadership program at a very prestigious university that happened once a week for about four months (junior year)
Leader of freshman orientation program (senior year)
Peer mentor once a week for a middle schooler (junior and senior year)
Invisible Children club member for 4 years
Various one-time tour guiding at my school (ex back to school night)
Other one-time volunteer opportunities
I've also worked at a pool this summer and last summer as a lifeguard and swim instructor

So basically my question is, how much will my ECs hurt me when applying to very elite schools? I commonly see people on CC discussing the importance of dedication to one or two activities, but I'm not sure my commitment to swimming is strong enough to be considered one of those. I'm also not getting recruited to swim, but may consider walking on.
Any insight into how much my ECs will be damaging to my application would be greatly appreciated!

…weak?

You have excellent EC’s, and have been on here WAY too much if you think otherwise. You’ve shown commitment not necessarily to one or two EC’s, true, but you have many EC’s that are closely related to one another (e.g. working as a lifeguard, instructor, and being on the swim team for four years, not to mention the Special Olympics coaching!).

Don’t worry about EC’s, as you’ve more than shown your dedication to helping others learn and feel welcome, and your love for swimming and helping others swim.

Best of luck! :)

Thanks so much! I guess I’ve just fallen prey to the CC craziness. It seems like everyone who hasn’t saved the world is criticized for weak ECs!
