Weapons/War History class?

I've heard some upperclassmen/alumni talk about a class in which you learn about a lot of the history of weapons used in warfare (from ancient times to WWII-and beyond eras) and then you get to actually TRY some of the weapons. Apparently the professor is a huge war buff and collects all of the weapons himself?

What is the class called - bc I've been looking and I can't find it. I've considered that it might be one of those "Military Science" classes, I'd really like to try this class... if it exists.

damn, that sounds like a fun class

never heard of such a class…it might be that a war buff professor has weapons in his private collection at home…

there is a “weapons of mass destruction” class but i think it focuses on disarmament rather than the actual science :P

Barry Strauss is the most prominent military historian on campus. Maybe him? He taught History of Battle my freshman year, and he took the class on some field trips.

I remember when friends FB posted pictures of them trying out the weapons and it looked really fun. I can’t remember what class it was or if it’s still running.

If that class existed, Barry Strauss would teach it. He’s the history department’s military historian.

He teaches “History of Battle,” “War and Peace in Greece and Rome,” “Small Wars in Greece and Rome,” the sophomore seminar “Introduction to Military History,” etc. The first sounds most like what you’re looking for, but I didn’t hear anything about trying out weapons.

Unfortunately it isn’t being offered next year.

[Courses of Study 2008-2009](http://courses.cuinfo.cornell.edu/CoScourses.php?college=AS&dept=History)

Here’s the course description for that class (History 363) from Spring of 2008, when it was last taught:

“A study of battle and its changing character from the ancient world to the present day. Topics include the soldier’s experience, command and control, tactics; technology, organization, and the nation; logistics and supply, battle and military strategy, battle and civilians, memory, historiography.”

Another possibility is Isabel Hull, who is (I believe) the department’s only other military historian, and teaches a couple of classes in WWII history. But I think you’re looking for one of Strauss’s classes.

weapons of mass destruction is pretty interesting - its a govt class about nuclear policy.

you’ll find a lot of quirky policy based conflict classes that all have kind of the same feel in my opinion and are really interesting. Not sure if this helps at all, but is a list of the classes I enjoyed that may have a similar feeling to what you mentioned. All are really interesting and most importantly fun.

A few of my friends took courses offered by ROTC that all focused on Military and are generally not taken by non-ROTC students… might be fun and what you are looking for, but I dont know the names.

International Relations in govt talks a lot about globalization, hegemony, and the cold war arms race. Intro gov class so a lot of reading and less fun.

Israeli Palestinian Conflict - self explanatory, NES/Govt

Prisons - Highly recommended about the US penal system in Govt

Middle Eastern Politics - Least favorite of the listed, but pretty interesting look into the structure and hierarchy of ME culture and political influences.

Pop Culture 1950’s-Present - American studies, great professor, this is the best of the 2 pop culture classes

History of Rock
