Wearing White?

I had a very brief conversation with a mom who was here in Atlanta to drop her daughter off at Spelman, and she was shopping for more white clothing for her. She told me that as a freshman, they had to all wear all white for two weeks, and were confined to campus.

Can anybody tell me what is the significance of this tradition? As I said, it was a very brief encounter with her at the mall so I didn't get details. Thanks.

Does anyone know what the Spelman acceptance letter looks like? Is it a regular small envelope, or is is a large envelope package? Thanks!

It is a large light blue envelope that says Congrats on the outside.

Thanks so much! And do u get your letter before April 1st or after April first?

Thanks! And do you get the letter before April 1st or after april 1st?

I know this thread is old but in case anyone else reads it:

This is NOT TRUE. You don’t have to wear all-white for two weeks; someone got their lines crossed. Here are the two traditions from whence that arose (I graduated from Spelman College in 2008):

You must wear skirts and/or dresses during orientation. Orientation is about a week and a half. It is only until a certain time - around 6 pm - when you are walking around campus doing orientation activities. It is to honor our sisters before us, who could only wear skirts or dresses when Spelman was first begun as a seminary. They don’t have to be white, though.

On special college occasions - Induction (at the end of orientation week), Founders day (Friday closest to April 11), Class Day, Baccalaureate, and Graduation, Spelman women wear white dresses with flesh-toned stockings and black shoes. This tradition is to honor our Spelman sisters from old times - the best dress they owned would usually be a white dress, but they usually only had one pair of shoes which was usually black, since black goes with everything. So they would wear the nice white dress with the only black shoes they owned. It sounds silly but it’s quite beautiful to see a long line of Spelman women and alumnae wearing this on special days.
