weather and calculator

sorry the other "ask a ?" was getting too cluttered

i have never seen snow, in fact i think any temp under 70 degreed is cold..... how has your experience been with the weather there? too cold?(yikes!)do we need a bunch of sweaters and scarves and stuff?

also do we need a ti-89? we use it for HS calculus, so i was jst wondering

LoL... I'm from Southern California, so I hear ya on the weather. From about April to October, the weather is nice... 70s, 80s, even 90s. A little on the dry side, but not too bad. In the winter, it's sometimes rainy (last year was very wet, but this year hasn't seen too much rain). Instead of rain, this year we've got cold... highs of 55, lows of 30. Kind of sucks, but I'm getting used to it. Just bundle up with a thick jacket, gloves, and a hat when you bike to class :) At least it isn't snowing!

For the calculator, it probably depends on what classes you want to take that need a calculator...

Oh my goodness. I was marginally worried that it was going to be too hot for me. You see, I'm a total weeny when it comes to heat: anything much above 75 degrees (+ humidity) kills me...

...But then again, I was in France during a month of their *canicule/I last summer, and yeah, it killed me, but then I got used to it (by the last week I was there)... then I went to Scotland for a week and was FREEZING--though everyone else who was there (I met friends there) was talking about how bloody hot it was!:p

But anyway. You'll get used to whatever weather Stanford throws at you. It doesn't sound like it's so extreme that it'd take a long time to acclimatize. :)

lows of 30 ....that's BELOW FREEZING. now i'm worried.

i live 20 minutes away. Dude, the past week, it's been fckuing freezing around here. (like, lows of 30, although east coasters will scoff). the weather's not as good as socal but it never really dips below 55, maybe 50. summers are beautiful, breezy and never really scorching thanks to the nice san fran bay so close. the weather's great, it's a non-issue :)

Man.. I'm looking forward to that weather. I live in Washington State, and temps were in the TEENS last week. 30s is nothing =) It's snowing so bad we got today off and school is cancelled tomorrow too. I love warm weather!

Man, I wish they canceled school here. I live in the East Bay, and it just randomly started raining today. I love rain, and it's about time we got some again. But WHY oh WHY does it have to be cold and NOT snow? At least then we wouldn't have school or something.

Agreed, pyleela. I'm from Minnesota, and the temperatures are reminding me quite a bit of home, but without the snow that makes the cold worth it.

haha thats funny...yeah we got school off and i live in TX b/c it was like 36 degrees.....(freezing in TX weather)

It's actually not that bad...while the weather does get down to the 30s for lows, during the daytime it's almost always sunny and pretty bearable. People are definitely still outside and stuff, and although there's nobody sunbathing or doing other things fit for summer, the weather is nice enough to allow outside activities to occur. The club ultimate team has been consistently practicing 3 times a week, for instance.

I'd say to bring a jacket at least, and sweatshirts are nice. But your big puffy coats/parkas are unnecessary.

As for calculator...I took Math 42 and that didn't require a calculator at all, ever. The course is structured that way. I know it may be kind of weird to consider how that may be possible since so many of us took calculator-allowed high school calculus, but it's really not that bad. I'm in Stats 60 right now and it requires a calculator with only the most basic functions (although I'm not sure if we'll get into pdf/cdf functionality stuff later).

The weather here is great!! That's what I usually tell people anyways. I live 15 minutes away from Stanford so I've been here my whole life, and the weather has always been awesome. These past 2 weeks have been RECORD temperature lows though, but it's nothing that's unbearable. As long as you bring a versatile wardrobe you'll be prepared for anything. A ski jacket will get you through the COLDEST nights when you have to bike to evening classes as well as the early 9 am's. A regular down jacket should suffice for fall. Spring and Summer...no jacket at all. Honestly you shouldn't worry. Just bring some jackets and you'll be fine.

As for calculator, I took MATH 51 (Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calc part 1) my frosh winter quarter and I used my old TI-83. Not a problem. Hope this helps.
