So I am considering applying to both these schools however I have never lived in a place that snows. Can any current students comment on how much the weather effects them and if it is a big deal or not?
It’s not a big deal. People hear Chicago and freak out and think it’s the arctic. In the winter, it’s cold. There are frequent shuttles on campus, the sidewalks are always paved on campus as well.
Hi, I’m from a place where it only very rarely snows and doesn’t get that cold in winter, so I might be able to help out.
Winters can get pretty darn cold, but if you get appropriate clothing (mittens, thick jacket, winter boots, hat, scarf, pants) you should be okay temperature-wise. I didn’t have any of those items really before college, in fact I only got them after the first quarter at NU after winter weather had already set in. Before I got that suff, I was miserable outdoors, but afterward, it wasn’t that bad except for the -20 degree polar voxtex times. Being / walking / running outside in the sub-freezing cold while wearing warm clothes can actually be rather fun, I’ve found.
The weather can get you emotionally though, at least for me. A warm social (and thermal!) environment helps get you though that. Such a level of affectedness might not exist in everyone, however.
Yes. The effect of cold weather can affect how you feel, but thatrunnerkid pointed out how to overcome it.
