i'm from cali and (this is gonna stupid but...) my biggest fear about nu is the weather. how many months does it snow? is it depressing to people like me from cali? also how long is your winter break? cuz if i'd be home in cali from december to mid-january or something and it only snows until february, i think i could manage. lol.

Well… I graduated 25 years ago… but I can tell you that it was cold… and kind of snowy… and it’s not necessarily over in February. But that in no way changed my opinion of my experience there. Plus, I hit up my parents for a great trip to the Bahamas for spring break my sophomore year - I called in the middle of a cold snap telling them about the wind chill temps…and that worked like a charm!

On the positive side, the campus is beautiful and, when it’s nice, you can enjoy the beach (right on campus) - although there’s less of it now than when I went because they have built so much. And I do remember the random warm days in April when we hit the beach. You also can’t beat the Fall at NU. I was there in October, Homecoming Weekend. It was beautiful, with all the leaves changing colors.

It’s a great school. Don’t let the weather deter you.

Winter break is from about the 10th of December (depending on exam schedule) till the first weekend of January. And no, unless global warming has a stellar year, you will have a lot of cold and/or snowy days the following term. My D actually didn’t complain about it though last year - she viewed it as part of the NU experience, and took it in stride. So yes, be prepared for rough weather - it probably does good with the bug and cockroach population.

I don’t live in Evanston, but I live in the Northwest Suburbs, and I have lived in the Chicago-land area my entire life (yup - all 17 years LOL). So this is how winters are out here in the ILlest of the Midwest. ;-)

Winters can be brutal. They start out as cold with no wind, then there’s wind. Then there’s on and off days where there is no wind then wind, alternating. Snow comes into play on these on and off days, but the snow, at this point, is actually quite pleasant. Then there just snow and wind. After a good blizzard, it always seems delightfully cold to me (maybe it’s because it’s all I know for the winter LOL). Then there’s January onwards, which can be a nightmare. This is when the snow keeps coming, but you don’t really want it to. Then the snows starts to get slushy and brown on the streets and you get icy snow (a real pain). After this period, which seems to just keep going, you are in the clear for beautiful Chicago spring and summer.

Seriously though, I love the weather out here. Like it’s perfect. You get wonderful Springs and Summers. You get delightful Falls. You get beautiful winters up until mid January to February. This “nightmare” period is relatively short, however, and you get used to it relatively fast (after about 2 years of being out here).

I LOVE CHI-TOWN AREA! REPRESENT! :-P

I’m from Cali as well, and currently, I’m a freshman at NU. Obviously, compared to the mid-70s warmth of SoCal, Evanston’s winter is much colder. The norm… now… is in the mid 30s. Snow started falling this week, and apparently, that’s sort of late. The cold wind kills. You definitely need winter coats, gloves (a must), boots, winter hats (knitted, but that’s my personal preference), and earmuffs (not exactly necessary, but I bought one anyway). It’s definitely part of the NU experience, since SoCal is sunny and warm every day, every month, every year. To see flurries of snow fall is nice, actually. BUT, do bear in mind that simply layering jackets will not help. You NEED winter coats!

haha i was born in evanston but i have lived in 2 towns north my entire life, having said that summers/spring are very really nice, you will enjoy sept, march, april, may and if your there for june then june also, unfortunately things get rough around mid october-february then again it was 60 degrees for some reason around Thanksgiving (don’t ask weathers weird around here) but for the most part oct 15-feb 28 get your winter coat, every other time you should be okay

decent summer weather ends by mid-october, 40s-30s until december, and 20s-35ish in december, thts when snow starts to accumulate on the ground and doesnt melt till march, basically january to late march is the worst time, 20-0 and there will always be that one or two weeks where the windchill will hit -20 or -30, and sometimes it’ll even snow in early april don’t expect it to heat up until may but it’ll happen overnight. I live 20 minutes north of evanston
