Weather at WUSTL WASHU / ST LOUIS

Hi,
I would love to hear from Missouri students or residents about the weather!
I've heard enough stories, but I want to find out from someone who has actually been there or studies there.
My dream university is Washington University in St. Louis
I know that the weather is not going to be completely optimal, but I want to prepare myself in the case I do get in!!

Is it really that cold and dreadful? How much snow do you get?

I would love also to hear commentary on the weather all four seasons! If you go to this specific school, I would love to hear about the campus as well and the weather on campus.

Yeah, I guess I could just watch the weather forecast or search it up on weather.com but i would love to hear it from you guys. It'd be more personal, and I'd get a better general idea, I think.

St. Louis weather is pretty terrible. But here’s CP’s take on it:

“For reasons better explained by a qualified meteorologist (for example, local favorite Ben Able of 90.7 KWMU), St. Louis frequently experiences dramatic shifts in weather from one day to the next. Last spring, on more than one occasion, it snowed one day and was warm enough for T-shirts and shorts the next. That said, the pattern of seasons remains relatively constant. The range of conditions goes from quite cold in the winter (bring lots of fleeces, sweatshirts, gloves, a hat, and a winter coat), to unbearably hot and muggy in the summer. Fall and spring, though, are two delightful seasons. Warm and sunny at first, fall tapers off into cool breezes, gorgeous foliage changes, and hazy golden sunsets. And spring in St. Louis is well worth the wait through the often agonizingly long winter. Trees and flowers bloom and blossom all over campus, temperatures reach warm but rarely unpleasant highs, and most importantly, students suddenly begin wearing less clothing than before. All of those pasty white bundles of overworked, sun-deprived students finally shed their layers and show off their occasionally sexy bodies.”

@santeria amen brotha weather here sucks… in a good way but that’s only most of the time haha. Just look at new years eve, which is a good example. It was kind of unusually warm out and then a storm came through and a tornado hit several places including this church next to my house in fenton! Then it got cold again though it was sunny out the next day haha but hey makes me appreciate the days we have good weather.

St. Louis experiences mild springs and falls, moderately cold winters (not bone-chilling cold, but you’ll need a good winter coat), and generally hot, humid summers. STL will get several good snow storms each year, but the snow often lasts for only a few days.

St. Louis weather has all four seasons, with hotter summers and colder winters than New Jersey, for example. (My son attends WUSTL, and we’re from NJ.) My son has found the extreme weather changes from day to day to be noteworthy, and different from NJ, but hasn’t found cold to be a particular problem. The campus is not too big, so he doesn’t have walks longer than 10-15 minutes.

The heat is only a problem for a few weeks in August/September, and the dorms are air conditioned, so it’s not a big problem. Spring and fall are typically pretty nice weather-wise. As to how bad the winter is, it is all relative to what you are used to. St. Louis isn’t as bad as Boston or upstate New York or Chicago, so it probably has milder winter weather than most of its peer schools, which are largely in the Northeast, with some notable exceptions in the South or West.

And NEVER expect a snow day at WashU

I think the winter cold is well recognized, but what many may not be aware of is the summer heat. I lived in that general part of the country some years ago, after 9am in the summer it was so unbearable I could hardly walk outside.

Lived there in the 80s right out of college, assume the weather is still the same. Weather is relative to where you’re coming from. Compared to WI, where I grew up, I thought the winters were fairly mild, not cold and dreary. One year we had 70’s the whole week between Christmas and New Year’s. Personally, I thought the summers were unbearably hot and humid, and for more than a few weeks, but partly because my car didn’t have AC. Now if you’re coming from further south, you may find it pleasant. Other than the weather, it was a great place to live.
