weather?..be honest!

any current students from UR please be honest about the weather. i've heard different things. i heard it isn't really that bad but then i also heard people get seasonal depression there. right now i'm about 75% sure i'm coming to UR next year but part of what's holding me back is the weather. i'm from right outside boston so i'm definitely used to snow. someone please help!

<a href="http://www.erh.noaa.gov/ifps/MapClick.php?CityName=Rochester&state=NY&site=BUF%5B/url%5D">http://www.erh.noaa.gov/ifps/MapClick.php?CityName=Rochester&state=NY&site=BUF</a></p>

Rochester will definitely get more snow than the Boston area. I think the tunnels are functional for part of the main campus so you can avoid going outdoors if you want. The snow is cleared quickly around campus. I have heard that lack of sunlight during the winter is a bit of a bummer.

I am living in upstate NY. I don't think it's that bad and horrible. Sometimes Boston even got more snow than we did (like this year). So it's hard to compare, but since you're also living in the northeast, you should be okay!

My Alaskan kid is going to LOVE it:)

Well, here's the scoop. Yeah, Rochester's weather pretty much stinks.

We can get a TON of snow in the winter, although this past winter we hardly had any (but that is VERY unusual). They do a good job on the roads, and parking lots are salted to death. (We kid about salt storms on our highways - literally there will be a white haze swirling around and all the trees plastered in white salt.)

I've lived in both Boston and Rochester. To me the biggest difference is the number of cloudy days. Rochester is CLOUDY much of the time. It can get fairly depressing. It is also quite windy here. All of this is due to lake effect (off both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario).

We do however have beautiful summers. Spring is pretty because we have great trees. We have no earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, mud slides, water shortages, etc., so that's the good news!

Having lived here for quite some time (over 20 years), I will agree with Weenie-

If you just hate winter - the snow, cold and grey skies, the Rochester winter can be long. People can get pretty "ugly/cranky" come March (thus Spring break) without seeing much sun. Really, not too different from anywhere else in the Northeast! But, probably unlike Boston, it takes A LOT of snow to cancel things, because the road crews have the skill, supplies and equiptment to keep things going.

But, if you like winter, there is lots of fun stuff to easily do! Spring is lovely (HIghland Park). Summer too, even when it gets hot ( remember, there is fresh water to cool down in everywhere). Fall is beautiful but too brief.........just sneaks into winter come mid November.

I'm an int'l student from south africa and we have the best weather there (mild, not extreme), so rochester is pretty excruciating to me. Walking out into the wind feels like a thousand shards of glass cutting through your bones. I was told that this winter wasn't as bad as previous years, but the polarity of the weather is mad annoying (50-60 degrees this week, then a blizzard washes over the city the next)!
