Weather for a Floridian

A lot of people complain about the weather at Rice as being hot and humid. Living in Orlando, Florida, does Houston's hot compare to Orlando's or Miami's hot? Just wondering, because I have lived in Orlando for quite some time, so I can deal with hot and humid.

Here’s a link comparing the two (as long as my link works). It looks like the temperatures are pretty much the same during the hot months, but Houston gets colder in the cold months.

I just have a side question regarding the weather. I’m from New England so I’m used to the cold. What temperature do people from the “hot states” consider cold? I heard from a friend who’s currently down south that at temperatures where she was still wearing T-shirts, people were acting like it was the Ice Age.

Houston is pretty humid-- we’re on the coast, so when I go down to school (as opposed to when I love in Dallas), it’s just pretty darn humid all the time.

I’ll take anything at 40 or so is cold. I can get away with wearing flip-flops year-round, but anything in the 40s is freezing cold, thank ya very much. However, we deal with weeks of triple digits, so I like to think it all pans out.

Houston’s humidity is way worse than Miami’s but it doesn’t last as long, so it’s pretty much a wash. July and August are the worst, but it begins to cool off and get less humid in September in Houston, whereas Miami stays bad until late October.

It gets much colder in Houston than in Miami but it’s rarely less than 40. Rice has the occasional snowfall but it doesn’t really stick.

so would it be safe to say that most kids at rice don’t need heavy coats/peacoats and/or a pair of uggs/snowboots? I’m from the NE so the weather scene here is also completely different than Houston

dear god no

I live 20 miles from Rice and my grandparents are all in Polk County, FL so I have a good feel for the weather both places. Humidity is about the same in both places in summer but it’s dryer in winter in Houston. Orlando gets regular afternoon rains during the hot months and Houston gets a lot of rain in summer, but it’s not as predictably regular every afternoon. It’s a little hotter in Houston in summer and sometimes its unbearably hot here. It’s just about never unbearably hot in central FL. It is too hot to wear jeans in the daytime in Houston in summer. Jeans are winter clothing here.

It’s colder in Houston than central FL in winter, but not so much colder that you need a whole new wardrobe. We don’t get snow. We have palm trees and banana trees, but most citrus trees don’t do well here.

Once the high temps are below 60 on a regular basis, we call that winter in Houston. If a day doesn’t get above 50, we call it a cold day.
