weather in ithaca (a.k.a OMG)

So I applied ED to Cornell, there's no university i'd rather attend next fall, blah blah blah.

Guys, I live in Florida (south Florida, near Miami), and I just looked at the weather forecast for Ithaca.

Today: High of 31, Low of 19.

DAMN that is cold. And it's only NOVEMBER 18th!!!

Coming from Florida, I can't even imagine how cold it must be in Ithaca. It gets to low 50's here in the dead of "winter", and people at my high school are bundled up like it's Northern Michigan.

Gonna have to invest in some warmer clothes (pending application status)

Sure beats a hurricane.

If it is any consolation, there will only be a high of 43 in Durham, NC today, and I would much rather have 30 degrees and snowing than 40 degrees and raining.

For a better view of today's weather... Live Campus View :)

haha yes, ithaca does get cold

If it makes you feel better, we are running anywhere from 5-10+ degrees (depending where you are) below average up here in NY. A normal November day is not that cold. However, December -> February/Early March... yeah... lol. Snow is great, you will come to love it. Except driving/walking through piles of it, that can get tedious and frustrating. Plus because of it's crystalline structure snow clears out the lower atmosphere's fine particulates, so it's much easier to breathe up here in the winter if you have any sort of allergies or respiratory ailment. Okay, that's my spiel. I could go on and on, lol. (met.major) I hope you get in and learn to love central NYS!

My daughter woke up this morning with a major snow fall overnight. She was slipping and sliding as she was talking to me on the phone. Yesterday, she said it was snowing sideways. Other than that, she loves Cornell. Go to Youtube and search for "Cornell snow day."

Awww...I miss the snow. It's currently 51 degrees and sunny in New Orleans....but all the natives are walking around in snow gear :-)

My nieces both went there from Texas and had a major adjustment to the weather.

BUT, Cornell has an unusually long winter break. My nieces said that the length of the break was so students would forget how miserable the weather is and decide to come back ;)

I do LOVE cornell and will be sad to graduate this year, but I do absolutely hate hate HATE the weather here.

Not trying to discourage, but there needed to be some reality among the "love the freezing-ness" posts

You doth protest too much. What do you think the weather is like at Carleton? At Northwestern? At Michigan? At UW-Madison? At Dartmouth?

Colder and windier. That's what the weather is like at those places.

I would not call today's weather a major snowfall. it was indeed enough to make the sidewalks slippery, but depth-wise it's probably an inch (if you're rounding up.)

a parka, gloves, a had, and a scarf, and you're all set. my sneakers were even fine for today. when it comes to snow I'd rather be on foot than trying to drive a car!

PS. I had no idea about that webcam. that's neat.

Cayuga, no one's saying that the weather in those places is good, but this is a Cornell forum, so naturally, people are going to whine about Cornell weather and not Michigan weather.

I love the snow! I'm from Long Island and it's a little warmer down here in NYC/LI than upstate. Unfortunately, we don't get as much snow down here, but I heard it snows a lot more in Ithaca. gosh, I hope I accepted so I can see for myself.
Does anyone on campus go sledding??!

yes, although technically no sledding is permitted on Libe Slope...I have a lovely scar on my back because from my sledding adventures :-)

faustarp - my daughter could be a bit of a drama queen, so there was a quite a bit of whining this morning.

webcam doesn't work for me - at home or work. What software does it require?

Carlton, Northwestern etc may be cold and windy, but none of the schools mentioned are as gray and gloomy during the Winter as Cornell. I didn't mind the amount of snow in upstate NY. In fact I kind of liked big snow storms. They were exciting. What got to me was that in the winter it seemed like the sun never came out and we seemed to get snow flurries on a daily basis. I'm sure that it couldn't have been as bad as I remember it, but it clearly left an impression. While upstate NY is a wonderful place to be in the summer, unfortunately that was when I left for home.

I'm from Long Island and the wind chill factor is pretty high, but it really isn't that bad. I just came back from lunch and all I have are some timbs, a thin North face denali and a hoodie and I'm fine. I was originally really worried about the weather but it's only a couple degree lower than LI with a bit more precipitation. I've only been here for a semester, but that's what I've seen so far. Summer really is amazing fyi.

^ I imagine it's not the peope from the Northeast who have trouble adjusting, it's the ones from the warmer climates. I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't have 4 seasons though, they're just missing out.

I don't know how that webcam works. I just clicked on the link and all of a sudden I had a bird's eye view of Willard Straight! it says Java is loading as it starts up, but I know nothing about computers.

You'll be cold.

Snow just hit yesterday/today (although right now it's looking sparse in some places)

How cold you will be depends on how appropriately you dress.

(If you think sledding down Libe in the winter is nuts, imagine taking a bike down it during the summer! I can just picture someone shooting into the flag pole)

haha...I could see it.

Right after my sophomore year fall semester finals my friends grabbed some dining hall trays they'd "borrowed" from okenshields and we went sledding down the slope. Well....my tray shattered as I was in motion and I went right into a tree...and the sharp tray pieces got me on my back and left a nice gash.

gremfu! I live in South Florida too (more Ft. Laud area though) and I often think when we have "cold days" (50s-60s) how warm that will seem compared to Ithaca's cold days. That is, if I get in.
But it will be totally sweet having SNOW!
