I've heard many "bad things" about the weather in Rochester. Being from Boston, I bask in the freezing temperatures. However, I absolutely despise the snow and rain. How often/much does it precipitate in Rochester and how's snow removal on campus?

The weather at RIT is pretty bad. I went there for a year and transferred. There is always wind, because of the way the campus is designed. I heard that the campus was designed for Arizona so that it always had air flowing. Look up the number of gloomy days and I recall Rochester being gloomy like 50% of the time. The snow is pretty bad from December to March. The university is very good about snow removal.

Are there special considerations if you plan to live off campus?

The thing about Arizona is a rumor that most people tell as a joke.

The wind is welcome during the hotter months, and not that bad during the winter. You just need a good windproof coat.

ThatPoshGirl: what do you mean by special considerations?

Well, I’m considering RIT, but I would be living off campus. Does the weather ever get bad enough that the buses stop running? Does campus stay open, so would I be missing classes in those cases? Where I am right now, Northern Nevada, the campus closes if there is even an inch of snow. I’m guessing it isn’t like that there.

RIT closes due to weather about once in 5 years, is what I heard. In my 4 years there (I just finished) they closed twice, which was amazing.

Regarding the busses, I did not really take them much, but I dont think they stop running for anything short of whiteout. The plowing that is done on the City roads is pretty effective, and very thorough.

Also, are you coming in as a Freshman? I ask because I dont think freshmen can live anywhere but the dorms.

I’m coming in as a non-traditional transfer students, so dorms actually is not even an option for me.
