Just reading some visit reports and many commented on either a cold day or a very hot day. Of course, this varied by time of year.

What is the coldest it gets in Columbia, and does it snow there?

Is it difficult to walk to class in the snow?

Also, how hot does it get there during the school year?

We're coming from New Orleans, but so far have been focused on Milwaukee, which will be brutal, so looking for a "gentler" climate.

Also, brother-in-law taught at SW Missouri, in Springfield, for a few years, and he always talked about tornadoes.

Do they have tornado alerts on campus at Mizzou?

Check weather.com or one of the other weather sites for weather trends over the past few years. Though it’s not as consistently hot and humid as NO, or as cold as Milwaukee, it’s hot into September and beginning in April-May, and it does get cold and windy. Rain can be torrential and impressive. Last winter (my S was a freshman) there was very little snow, which probably was unusual. My H, who also went there, remembers nasty wind chill and ice, but winters are not as long as in the upper midwest. They do have tornado drills, but there were no tornados last year, either. Though they happen in Missouri (so do earthquakes, but Columbia isn’t on the New Madrid Fault), they’re not a regular thing. Overall, weather shouldn’t be a big obstacle.

Funny about the snow. We got snow in New Orleans and Houston last year.

Actually, son wants to see snow. Very much wants a northern school.

So, can he wear t-shirts and shorts for a good part of the year, and then go to sweats for the rest of the time?

I know this seems trivial, but I’m sure walking across a bigger campus will be not too much fun if you’re wearing 30 pounds of clothing, as well as carrying books.

I’ll check that weather site. Thanks for your help!

geezermom is right, you will get the full range of weather at Mizzou. It is very warm when school starts in august and through september, which makes it perfect shorts, t-shirt, flip-flop weather.
The weather in the fall can be very nice. Most of the early fall days he can get by wearing jeans and a t-shirt and slowly progress to jeans or sweats with a hoodie.
Winter can get cold. Nothing in the negatives really (unless you include the wind chill factor), but the lows can sometimes dip into the single digits. Your son will see snow if he goes there. I dont think that I’ve been through a winter in Missouri without seeing snow (12 years). I remember when I was a freshman there (04-05) we got plenty. He should be fine going to class with jeans, something long-sleeve and a coat. It will still be chilly with whatever you wear, but he should not get frostbite walking to class. I stayed in Graham Hall and I could get to any of my classes within 10 minutes, so the exposure to the cold should not be too long. The worst part of the winter is driving, as the roads can get icy at times.
Spring can have lots of thunderstorms. Of course tornados are always a risk in missouri, but I did not have any my year there. By the time school is ending it is back to shorts and t-shirt weather.
It may seem crazy (as Missouri weather is often described), but I love it. You get all four seasons.
