weather!

I'm from LA, and I'm definitely considering U of R...but the only down side is the weather. I'm getting 8k a year, which is pretty cool and helps a lot. Will I be able to survive in the extreme cold and still enjoy myself?? I can always stay here and go to ucsd. But...something is telling me to take a chance and go to Rochester. What do you think?

I have to say I am in love with rochester. I am from oregon so we get rain like rochester gets snow, but i am not worried about the transition. It should be a great experience and I just can't wait to go. The winters are bad but remember it is more about what you choose to do rather than what you say you are able to do.

You will get acclimated to the cold to an extent... Walking 1 mile to class from GLC with 50 mile per hour winds, tons of snow, and an ambient (not wind chill) temp of 10 degrees will never be fun.
So yeah.
And school will never ever ever ever close if there is a ton of snow because of the hospital... Case in point, we had a 2 foot snowfall- school was still open!

Don't come here if you don't like snow. It snows from December - March nonstop. Summers are nice here though. Springs are just melting periods. Just letting ya know

I have a son at Rochester and generally hear more concern for the weather from parents or people who haven't spent a winter at Rochester than from the students themselves. There are tunnels underground between many of the buildings and there are heated pipes under some walkways.

Honestly, I get excited when it snows here, becuase I love to ski... Really, I am almost transformed when it snows-- I get really entergetic and start bouncing off the walls just breathing in the winter air. Whoever decided that seasonal affect syndrome affects people hasn't met me :)

It depends-- if you hate overcast days and snow and rain in general, Rochester may not be the right school for you-- the weather does play a factor in overall happiness...

Certain snow vs. uncertain earthquakes? Am I missing something here?

NOTE: My tone is not meant to be mean-spirited in any way--I just can't help shaking my head at concerns over snow in the north, when other parts of the country have earthquakes, tornadoes, 110 degree days, etc.

It snows in Rochester. It also snows in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, etc. etc. etc. It snows in the Northeast. It is a fact of life we northerners have adapted to.

I sat through too many info sessions at too many northeast schools listening to parents worried about snow. Please, apply to schools in the south, if snow really bothers you!

Remember that if one has the appropriate clothing, housing and heating source, one can quite nicely survive the worst of the northeast winters. One simply needs to be prepared. Hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, mudslides, on the other hand - anyone can be a victim, regardless of how prepared you are.

Give me a simple, easy to avoid nor'easter any day!
