How warm is it in ithaca in general right now? Does it get cold at night? When do fall and winter weather start? I'm guessing I'll need summer clothes now but I feel silly bringing very many shorts and sundresses if I wont be able to wear them soon.

Highs in the low 80s, lows in the high 50s. Wonderful sleeping weather. You should be able to wear sun dresses until the last week of September. Autumn generally last from the third week of September through the third week of November, but that is not to say it won't snow at some point in early November.

December typically isn't bad. And January isn't bad either because there is a lot of snow on the ground. February/March slushiness sucks.

You should hopefully be able to wear sundresses intermittently by the third week of April.

How bad does the weather effect parties? As Cornell has a huge greek scene, won't the weather, especially in the winter, have a large effect on them?

The weather isn't bad right now....but the humidity sucks. I was in California all last week...but a few nights before I left the outside temp was in the 60s but the humidity was high.

right now it's pretty nice...but one cant rely on nice weather here...

people still party even though it snows...frats still bump. there are tcats and taxis.

I actually kind of want to be back in NY right now...I'm in Florida...right in the middle of the projected path of TS Fay...

awww sorry to hear that dewdrop....

and yeah people still venture through the ice...just wear a good pair of shoes (no heels please) and pack a cheap coat (one you can afford to lose)

I'm not certain I'd just rely on one "cheap coat" the whole winter; rather, I'd bring several of those, including once "nice" water/wind-proof hard shell-jacket (Patagonia has a 60%-off sale right now, excellent deals).

Winter shoes (Timberland, etc.) would be a good idea too, you can pick those up at a place like Paragon here in the city.

sundresses are adorable!

bring as many as you can (at least ones you'll know you'll wear given the right temperature) and wear them as often as temperature allows. I mean, you only have so much summer/spring in ithaca so might as well wear what you can during it!

winter comes later. right now, enjoy whatever you can get.

It "starts" getting cold around late-September in Ithaca, right?

^^hmmmm....actually it's gets chilly closer to the end of October. I was wearing flip flops into the first week of November. I didn't need my fleece jacket until then...and broke out the winter coat in December.

I remember walking comfortably around campus in late November in nothing but a sweater and jeans.

Depends on your definition of cold. Both dew and myself are from Upstate New York, so for us it doesn't start getting cold until December.

^haha...good point Cayuga.

My roomie was from SoCal and started bundling up in October :-)

The weather at Cornell is similar to spring weather even into November, when average temperatures are still in the 40s. Then the weather starts getting cold, and by January you could easily expect single digit and occasional sub-zero temperatures. Unfortunately, the weather remains somewhat cold until March, when average temperatures reach the 40s towards the end of the month.

Generally speaking, I only find February unfavorable. January is typically cold, but there is a lot of sun and snow on the ground, which really helps to make things brighter and warmer. (Snow is a fantastic insulator. I would much rather have it 28 and snowing than 35 and raining.)

Ithaca is going to be five degrees colder than Boston or New York in the winter. Five degrees isn't all that big of a difference. I could never understand why people complain about Ithaca winters, and not, say, Cambridge winters.
