Rice is pretty much my perfect college.. except for one thing: the fact that it's in Houston. I absolutely cannot stand hot and humid weather; I'd rather tolerate ten inch snowstorms on a routine basis than even think about the temperature reaching greater than 90 degrees.
Would anyone mind summarizing the average temperatures in Houston, the clothes students would typically wear, and how hot can it ACTUALLY get? It would really help me decide whether I should seriously consider Rice. Thanks so much!! =)

Very hot and muggy in August and September. After that, not so bad. Air conditioning in all buildings all the time. Many students wear shorts, sandals, t-shirts pretty much year round. If you can't STAND the weather, maybe you had better find another school. Students are out running around playing club and rec sports in the weather regardless, and you would be missing out a lot huddled inside next to an airconditioning duct. Then again, you might be surprised at how your tastes change after your first big Rice water balloon fight.

I was expecting it to be a lot worse in Houston, coming from the snow belt of Ohio. I still wear jeans and a tshirt every day, and I did even in the first few weeks. I see the weather here as purely a positive. Waking up to sun every day is pretty freaking awesome. I dunno, maybe it has just been really mild this season, but I really don't think it's that bad here.

The first few and the last couple of weeks are oppressively hot and humid, but the rest of the year is gorgeous. Even then, it's not unlivable. I lived here this summer and rode my bike to work every day. I showed up a bit sweaty, but all in all it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Wow, thanks for all the awesome responses!
I wasn't sure if it was gonna be worth the time to visit, as I'm fairly far away, but I'm definitely going to make a point of it now. Rice keeps sounding better and better - I mean, I can't pass up water balloon fights!

Houston's weather during the regular school term (Sept- May/June) is better than July and August :) Really the school year isn't bad at all. I'm very hot natured but Houston is very comfortable during the school year.

It is OK if you get used to it, but if you've lived in snow your whole life, it might be quite an adjustment. The temperature might not say it but its pretty much hot as hell half of the year. Today it felt like at least 90 degrees and its October.

I've lived in snow all my life and I adjusted pretty quickly. And once it gets past mid-September, it's bearable.

The weather is pretty nice during the winter. Summer however, is really bad. The temperature isn't neccessarily hot, but the humidity really takes the energy out of you. Also, Hurricanes suck (Ike). During the summer people wear shots and t-shirts. The winter, I get through with blue jeans and a light hooie. That's the extent of my winter clothes living in south Houston.

It is really hot but it is better than freezing up north in the winter.

You mention hurricanes like they're a regular thing. Two hurricanes have hit us in the last four years. Higher than average, yes, but still not very much.

I know their not regular occurance, and I didn't mean for it to sound like they are. I'm just throwing the subject out there.

DP

I'm from Philly so this weather is a lot different than what I'm used to. However, I've always hated the cold so I love it here. I think it varies from person to person, but from what I have experienced, I adjusted really fast and really enjoy being able to wear shorts right now and hearing how it is starting to get uncomfortably cold in PA

Freshmen from the North, just wait for November. Texas winter is sweet in a way that defies description.

Winter here is definitely nice. I love the winter atmosphere and a few years back we had snow on Christmas..it was freaking amazing.
