Weather

My mom's only real concern about Rice is the weather. How intense is the heat and humidity in Houston throughout the year? And do students take advantage of the weather or do they just hang out inside in the air conditioning? I've heard a lot of great things about Rice and I guess the weather is kind of the determining factor for me

There is really no use in asking this question, everyone is just going to tell you that the weather is fine and you'll get used to it. There is really no way you'll know what it feels like unless you come down here for a few days. If you're really interested, come down here and see for yourself.

Houston is not hot and humid throughout the year. If you're interested, just check the weather in Houston online now and then in the next few weeks so you can have an idea. Here's a link to monthly averages: Wedding Planner - Set the Date, Average Monthly for Houston, TX

Remember, as a student, you wouldn't be here during the summer. That's when the heat is at its worst. By mid-October the weather's beautiful. And wouldn't you want to be somewhere where it's in the 70's and sunny in February?

Do all or any of the dorms have air conditioning? Houston weather might be a significant issue for those students from the arid southwestern states of Arizona & New Mexico.

Yes. Everything's air conditioned.

Awesome, thanks for all your help...I'm definitely going to visit to see for myself but I wanted to first check if other North Easterners had a tough time adjusting. Thank you!

I'm from Philly and I never really liked the cold and I am loving it down here. Now that we are into Oct. the weather is perfect (although a lot of Texans complain about it being cold). Even when it was hot though, people still did stuff outside. I love the weather here.

We took a tour in early August -- it was hot but not brutal -- no worse than NYC summer.

how cold does it get in the winter- i like it cold
my one turnoff for rice is that it might be to far south for me

Weather was a concern for us, too. Everyone will tell you that Houston weather is hot. My daughter has been enjoying the weather, though, and especially appreciates being able to do sports outdoors on the lighted intramural fields at 9:30 or 10 at night.
