Webster Hall

Has anybody here ever been inside Webster Hall? It used to be a nice hotel at one time. Now it consists of student apartments. Any opinions?

I'll be honest with you. I have gone to Pitt for 2 + years and have never heard of that place. Where is it located?

I think it's at the corner of Fifth and Belfield, sort of diagonally across from Heinz Chapel. It's a big building....

Thanks for the link. We have walked past this place numerous times while visiting D and I wondered if it was apts. However $775/mo for a studio seems high for a student apt. otoh, it does seem to have lots of amenities in the bldg, and you sure can't beat convenience or safety. If you go check it out, let us know what you think.

Yes it is across from the Heinz Chapel.

I will send a report if I visit. I have to warn you that we pay over $700 per month each for a four person apartment in Bouquet Gardens (university owned housing). I just want to avoid any dangerous or filthy slumlord places, and I don't care if I have to pay a few bucks more to get that.

My sophomore daughter "really really wants" to move off campus next year, and I am concerned about slumlord places. lkf, are there other university-owned apts in addition to Bouquet?

Here is an apartment directory.

I know that Pitt owns "apartments" all along Oakland Ave, but these are actually row houses divided into apartments. I think it looks pretty slummy, as well as being in the South Oakland area which tends to be noisier and less safe. There always seems to be lots of piled up garbage when I've driven through South Oakland. To my way of thinking, there is more security in a big apartment building with restricted access than there is in a row house. There are several apartment buildings in North Oakland in the Belfield/North Craig/Center Avenue area. I know from experience that Shadyside has some awesomely nice apartments and townhouses. I hope to go and visit a few places along with my son in the near future.

How much notice do you need to give to these landlords???? If I can't get housing on campus, I need to go to get housing off campus. Can I give the landlords like a few weeks notice before I move in?

Thanks, ikf, that's a helpful list. I hope you'll post about your apartment visits later on.

Surf,
I think you will get housing on campus. But just in case you find that you won't get housing, you should call the management companies on the list and see what they have open. Alternately, you could use the roommate and sublet service. Maybe somebody is looking for a roommate or maybe somebody with a co-op is willing to sublet.
http://www.ocl.pitt.edu/RoomSublets/index.html

I think you should first call Pitt housing and ask if they will have a dorm, suite or apartment for you when you come in January. There are always some people who leave the university midyear. That would be the easiest solution and it would help you to become familiar with the campus faster.

yea, I hope to get housing on campus.

On my enrollment form I said that I would prefer to live on campus. Actually spoke to someone from Panther Central today, and they said my best chance for on campus housing is in Forbes C. He said I have a good chance of housing in Forbes C, but other places are quite full. They will know more in a month.

What is Forbes C Like? I know Forbes is freshmen housing, will Forbes C have a bunch of freshman?

What is Forbes C? Do you mean Forbes-Craig Apartments?

Actually I meant Litchfield Tower C, those are mostly singles. They said the highest chance of housing is in singles or upper campus, as that is where most transfers are placed. I might not mind the upper campus if I can get a roommate since I wont know anyone, but a single might be difficult.

Tower C would be a great place to stay, right in the middle of everything!

Yea, the best chance of housing I have is a single. I would prefer a double, but maybe this will work out fine. I should know within a month or two exactly what assignments open up, but at least I'm not transferring in the fall (much bigger wait list).
