My daughter was accepted into Webster’s acting program and also into Catawba’s MT program. MT is really what she wants to do and I understand that at Webster the two programs are very heavily linked, and she would be able to take all the dance classes and private voice. However, would she get more of what she wants/needs in the MT program at Catawba? Which would prepare her better in the long run? Any info/advice would be appreciated! I don’t know much about either school, not being a theatre person myself, and there doesn’t seem to be a ranking system for performing arts schools, at least that I can find.

Yes, the MT and acting majors take many of the same classes for the first two years. They take voice, musical theatre, dance, etc. THe two majors really work well together and they each have many opportunities to do both musical and non-musical productions.

Thanks, Marianne. She's really set on Webster, so it looks like that's where she'll be!

Hooray! I really do think it is a great program.

marianne406 is absolutely correct.

I myself am an Acting major, and I have a one-hour voice lesson each week, just the same as the MTs. All Conservatory classes are both MT and Acting majors for the first two years, and there is a lot of overlap Junior and senior year as well. I am not taking dance this year, but a freshman Acting major is taking dance, and she even placed into Jazz two. Also, someone in my class began the year as an Acting major and transferred to the MT program, and someone who spent this year as an MT major is switching majors to Acting.

Whether an actor is an MT or Acting major is not at all considered in terms of casting, plenty of MTs are in the straight plays and vice versa.

Glad to see you made your way over from the Theatre/Drama board ;)

Congrats to your D on her decision; I agree with Marianne, absolutely -- Webster really is a great program! The flexibility and opportunities available for both Acting and MT majors is a huge plus in my eyes.

Thanks to all of you for your replies! We're planning a visit to the campus the first week of June and really looking forward to it. My D is VERY excited and is counting down the days.
