Wednesday before Thanksgiving

Already making plane reservations for Thanksgiving. Do most professors/instructors cancel classes the Wednesday before the Thanksgiving Break?

When do most students leave for break? Tuesday after class?

Thanks guys for any help!!!!

No, most professors do not cancel classes on that Wednesday, although very few people end up going. One year I was able to leave the weekend before thanksgiving because I had nothing important going on that week. Depends on your schedule.

Not all professors will cancel class, but most of them know people will be gone, so they cover additional topics that won't be covered on the exam or show a movie or something along those lines.

Day before Thanksgiving is usually something that you can miss. Cannot think of a single class where there has ever been something important.

Sorry to be a little nitpicky, but I'm kind of freaking out right now (jeez, freshman :) ). I'm from NY so I'll have to be flying home for Thanksgiving, but my dad went ahead without consulting with me first and booked a flight for 5pm TUESDAY. Which means I'll have to leave campus around 2-3. Which means I'll have to miss a class that day. I know Wednesday is usually okay, but what about Tuesday? Should I ask my dad to change the flight to a later time?

how much are those air-fares costing you? I was looking at expedia and orbitz and none of the one-way tickets from Newark/Philly are less than $310!!! Round trips cost at least $420!! I paid only $110 (one way) when I came back to NJ in April, and i've never paid more than $310 for a round trip during thanksgiving/winter/spring break.

Know any websites where i can get cheap tickets?

Soon you're going to get to college, and you're going to realize that missing any class, any time, for any reason, is perfectly OK. Unless you're taking a midterm or a final that day, it's entirely up to you whether or not you go to class. The only exceptions are the few discussions where the professor is weird enough to take attendance. Even there, you can always do it once a semester if you need to.

thanks, tetra!

and MightyNick- my round-trip direct flight ticket was $610, but my dad used mileage points. i don't think he'll have enough points to keep this up for another year...:(

wow, why are the plane tickets so expensive now? mine used to be 160 roundtrip. (NY-LGA)

Go Vandy! The entire week off!!!

Maybe its because oil is something like $140 a barrel. Crazy stuff. I dunno if I should wait and see if I can get a better deal, or just buy my tickets now. Also, I'm not gonna go back home for thanksgiving because airfares are so ridiculously high.

Yeah I think I might forgo my trip back east for Thanksgiving as well. The break is too short and the airfare too expensive (I also heard they're going to start charging 15 bucks for each piece of luggage you check). I also can't focus on schoolwork at home, so im better off just staying.

Does UM Housing let you stay in the dorms during the Thanksgiving Break?

Yup, you only get kicked out between Fall and Winter semesters.

so do many people take the entire week off?

I understand how it is when you're a new student and want to be on top of things, but like tetra said, later it becomes no big deal. People miss class for all sorts of reasons: interviews (especially 2nd rounds), early vacations, extended vacations, sleeping in (whether it's by mistake or by laziness), and yes, even when it's snowing out and I really don't want to go.

For those attendance-based discussions, an explanation via e-mail has generally been excusable in my experience.

I haven't heard of many people taking the entire week off, but I'd guess that most people not from the area take off Wednesday.
